James L.'s Story

All three of my years at Highland were great. I was not much for all the studying, my day started at 4:00am moving sprinkler pipe for a farmer, coming home feeding the live stock and milking two cows, then I got ready for school, and that evening after school? And I thought there was a lot of fine looking young ladies at Highland 1964-1967 in all the grades, but I was kind of bashful and shy. Most of the girls had their eye on the jocks; I never had much of a chance with them. I was tagged as 1-A for the draft so I signed up for the Air Force right after high school and left in August after my sisters wedding. I spent 6 and half years in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Right after Basic at Lackland Air force Base San Antonio, Texas, I went to Chenute Air Force Base, Rantiol, Illinois for teach-school. single engine jet, Chrysler was testing Turban Cars back then. Maybe I could work for them when I got home. But I got a surprize and got transfered to ICBM's Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (Minute Man) My first main Base was F.E. Warren Air Force Base Cheyenne , Wyoming. I later Transferred to Malmstrom Air Force Base Great Falls, Montana I got out of the Air Force in Febuary 1974, hired on at JR Simplot in April of 1974; I will have 40 years with them at retirement of 66. 1975 met Elsa Gregersen for the second time, first time was in jr high at Paul Fuggers, a young lady, class 1969 Poky High School; if she had not been at a church dance with Enda Brodbent, I never would have met her the second time, she went to ISU and earned two BA's, a-cording to her friends, she was kinda shy and a wall flower, she ask me to go to church with her up at ISU, at the time my best suit was my dress blue's. we went in and all that knew Elsa was totally shocked! They asked Elsa! where did you find him?? went together for year, we were married in 1976 and have been to gather 40 years as Feb 7th 2016! We have two girls and two boys, 5 grand kids and one great grandson. The Good Lord Sent An Angel To Watch Over Me The 1st time my dad and mom was divorced and my oldest sister and brother, me and my little sister ended up in an orphanage, our family did not know where we were, one day my grandmother was in town and a news paper article with our photo on front cover was laying on a counter. She got a hold of the orphanage and made arrangements to get us. Our aunts and uncles fostered us!! The second time assigned to single engine jet, Chrysler was testing Turban Cars back then. l Ballistic Missiles. After thinking about it, I was glad for the switch, it guaranteed me State Side & not Vietnam and turbo's on choppers! The third time When I joined the Air Force it was my first time away from home in Idaho. And it was not just a couple a hundred miles away. From Idaho to Chanute Air force Base, Rantoul, Illinois, it was Christmas Holidays, I took the train to Chicago, got there around 5:30 am , sacked out in the train station until 8:00 am. Walked around taking in the sites to see, All free in uniform, about 3:00 pm or so I stopped off at the U.S.O. Club ( where town people would come in and entertain military personal, music, song and dance) sitting there talking to some fellow military personal. All of sudden I got this felling I needed to get back to the base in Rantoul, I returned, asked if there was any messages for me? Barracks Guard said no. so I told him If anything comes up I will be at the U. S. O. Club just off Chanute Air force Base, Rantoul, Illinois. I got a call there at the U. S. O. Club, from my brother in-law in Idaho, telling me to get with the Red Cross and get home, that the uncle that had fostered me and put me trough school had been in an auto accident and died. The fourth time I had a rude awakening, I was back home in Idaho, after I left the Air Force. I got a job at the J. R. Simplot Company, and met a guy there and started to bar hopping with him. It went on for about a year, I was feeling down on myself. I had 2 failed marriages, lost both my Aunt & Uncle that had fostered me, when one night I got home to my apartment, and seen myself in the mirror. I was alone no one else around, a voice asked me, Jim where are you headed? It spooked me looking around to see who was talking to me? there was no one else there! I quite bar hopping and started back to church, and met Elsa at a New Years eve dance of 1974 - 1975 in 1976 we were married in the Temple in Idaho Falls. the fifth time "Thank You Lord For Being with Us On Our Camp Trip"! The Teton Dam was an earthen dam on the Teton River in Idaho, It was built by the Bureau of Reclamation, ... Breach of Teton Dam, June 5, 1976; It was Elsa and I first camp out and fishing trip after we were married. We were packing up to come home from the West End of Island Park Reservoir. Elsa kept saying we need to get home. Ya! We have plenty of time, we finely got on the road, down off Ashton Pass and flat run to Idaho Falls. We had just got on to the Interstate headed to Pocatello and at Idaho Falls Broadway exit when the radio announced that Teton Dam had just broke! It flooded that whole Valley
