James's Story

Life I was born in Allen Memorial Hospital. My family lived between Ivanhoe and Lemasco. When I was five, we moved to 209 Graham Ave. in Bonham. It was a great street to live on. On one side of me were the Moores, Jerry, T, and Carolyn. On the other were Carolyn, Ricky, and Debbie Grisham. I attended Bailey Inglish grades 1-6. I was in the 7th and part of the 8th at Bonham Jr. High. Part of the 8th and the 9th were spent in Sherman. I came back to Bonhi for the 10th and 11th grades and finished my senior year in Denison. I attended the University of Texas and was a little less than studious so the Navy said, "come join us for awhile. Over the next thirty years, I spent many years in the USN, USNR, USNR-TAR and retired in 1992. During that time, I attended several colleges in Calif. and here in Austin. I was married for 20 years until my divorce in 1984. I have three grown daughters now who have given me eight and soon to be 10 grandchildren. In 1987 I met a young physician from Potomac MD and we married in 1989. We've now been married for 19 years and have three great kids ages 18, 16, and 9. We live outside of Austin in the Village of Bee Cave next to Lakes Travis and Austin. Soon I hope to get back to my golf game. I'm so much younger now than I was 20 years ago. Kids are the fountain of youth. Military I joined the Naval Reserve in D...Expand for more
enison TX in Aug. 1962, just prior to my senior year. Two months later "the Cuban missle crisis" was news and the corresponding blockade. Of course, in November, JFK was murdered. By the spring of the following year, many of my friends at UT were freaking out over being drafted, so many chose to join up. I was called to active duty in Aug. (the beginning of hostilities with North VietNam) and was sent to Charleston NC for processing. I was assigned to the 6th fleet out of Norfolk VA aboard the Flag ship, USS Little Rock (CLG-4). Aboard her over the next two years I saw the Mediterranean and all the countries along it(we were home-ported out of Villa Franz near Cannes), the North Atlantic: England, Amsterdam, and Sweden, and the Carribean many times. In 1966 I moved to San Francisco. While there the flower children were dominating local news in the Haight/Asbury district. Later I caught a guided missle destroyer, the Parsons (DDG-33) and went on two extended overseas deployments to Vietnam and participated in five campaigns which included Sea Dragon, Market Time, Gunline, and the Cambodia Blockade. I came back to San Franciso's Treasure Island for Instructor Duty and remained there for four years. I separated and then affiliated with the USNR and USNR-TAR and advanced to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer with Command designation. I retired in Jan 1993.
