James's Story

Junior High and High School Attended Ramstein Junior High School and then Kaiserslautern American High School through my Junior year of high school. My dad was transferred to Luke AFB, Arizona and I attended Trevor Browne High School for my senior year. I was on the K-Town newspaper staff and did the newspaper name artwork on each of the covers of the newspaper during my tenure.(this was before we had computers for that!) At Trevor Browne HS, I was active on the Yearbook Staff as a staff photographer and contributed many of the photos throughout the yearbook We had a photo lab and developed our own pictures and film. College Started College at Glendale Community College in Glendale, AZ and attended Arizona State University Air Force ROTC after graduating from high school in Arizona. My Sophomore year of college was spent at Florida Technological University - now called University of Central Florida in Winter Park, FL, just outside of Orlando, FL. My family had relocated to Keesler AFB, MS, so I attended The University of Southern Mississippi for my last 2 years of college and graduated in 1979 with a commission in the US Air Force. Military On my way to Norton AFB, CA, I attended Fuels Management Officer training at Chanute AFB, IL in the dead of winter, Jan 1980. I arrived at Norton AFB, CA as a Fuels Ma...Expand for more
nagement Officer in Feb 1980. Coming from Florida, it was very cold in Illinois. Two years later I transferred to Tyndall AFB, FL as a Fuels Management Officer where I was stationed for two more years. In the meantime I had applied for flight training, but was not selected until 3 months into my assignment to Hellenikon AB in Athens, Greece, where I was the Chief of the Material Storage and Distribution Branch. Upon completion of Navigator training in 1986, I was assigned to McChord AFB, WA after completing C-130 training at Little Rock, AFB, AR. After 6 months at McChord, my flying squadron was deactivated and I took an assignment to Hurlburt Field, FL in Fort Walton Beach flying in the AC-130H Gunship in 1987. I flew combat missions during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1993, I left active duty and transferred to the USAF Reserves flying the AC-130A Spectre Gunship and in 1995 transitioned to the MC-130E Combat Talon I. I was activated after Sep 11, 2001 and was deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. I retired in Oct 2006 with over 27 years of service. I had the opportunity to see many places around the globe. Some were better than others, but the USA was always the best. You just don't know what you're missing when you haven't experienced those other places.
