James's Story

School Days: I started to attend Central School at a very young and tender age. I was five years old, very small and wore glasses. I was a dweeb, which would be a dork today. You know the drill, I walked to and from school and even walked home for lunch. This story of course, as I grew older, became longer and more difficult journey, but at the time it was a peice of cake. Elementary school and middle or Jr High as we called it then was pretty much of a drag for me. I did however do relatively well when there was a teacher that I liked. Boy, were they hard to find! If I must name a favorite, it was Mrs Morris. I fell in love in the first grade, but she wouldn't marry me so I gave up on women until I started falling in love again by the seventh and eight grades, these were hot times for most of the class, but as for me, no one wanted to recipricate. I had two years of shop class in those years and made a corner shelf and a bow and arrow lamp while other guys were turning out full size funiture by the truck load. The lamp is now in the room of my oldest grandson of my youngest daughter. I don't know what happened to the corner shelf. Mom had it up and things on it for quite some time, then one day it dissapreared. As an avid basketball fan growing up in Indiana I made it onto the second string of the mighty Central Bulldogs. During my two years in Jr. High I think I had a total of 3 minutes playing time. I did however have a couple of opportunites to score, but missed both of my free throw shots. In High School, things got a little better. I had grown to 5' 3" by my junior year and weighed 105 pounds. However, my althetic career was over. I then turned to jounalism and become the sports editor for Lawrenceburg Consolidate High School newspaper (L-HI News) and our Senior year book. I wrote a weekly sports column for the L'burg PRESS titled "The Bucket Brigade" with my own bi-line. I owe most of my succsess in this effort to my MOM and DAD. She helped with the typing and DAD supplied a lot of constructive criticism and prose. I fell in love again by my Junior year, and this time somewone went along with it. WOW! I graduated in the middle of my 64 person class in 1954. It seemed like every award went to Judy Davis with the exception of one that Ray Gompf garnered. NEXT: two years at IU. College? This will be short and not so sweet. I was off to IU Bloomington campus in the fall of 1954. I had no idea what I was doing. I can remember my final weeks in high school thinking what the hell am I going to do now? Anyway, since I had taken the college prep courses all through school and had no other maketable skills it was off to IU. Most thought I would major in journalism because of the family background, but I matriculated toward business administration. Man was I literally a small cog in a big wheel. I should have suspected that my college career choice was a little lame since I chose IU because of it's great basketball teams. Plus, being a State School they pretty much had to let me in even thought my SAT score was 15. If I knew then, well you know. I had a "Syndrome" of some kind that made me clutch on timed tests. Otherwise I did OK most of the time. Anyway, I.U. had won the National Championship in 1953 under coach Branch McCracken. Well, the campus was beautiful as were the women. I was housed at the MRC which was a great place on 10th street and just across the street from the then football stadium. It was the fourth year for the Little 500. What a great event. Anyway, things being what they were I struggled through my freshman year. I am probably most proud of the time that I spent in the Air Force ROTC. I made the drill team and quified for the honor guard unit and carried the American Flag into 10th steet stadium for the start of one of the games. Now don't look for anything under military, because that was it. I failed my physical (4F). Yes, that is what it says on my draft card. I had bad eyes, and still do. And I was so looking forward to going to Korea. Just think, If I had passed and had money I probably would have avoided the draft or joined the Guard and be running for President today. WOW. I think I had a couple of roomates that year, maybe three. I remember Carl Owen Wortley from the "Region". Carl as were the others, was a...Expand for more
cool upperclassman who had a closet full of great looking drapes. That was "Region" for slacks. As time and many beers and games of hearts passed I seemed to settle in. We had an intigrated dorm, and I learned several new expresions and ethnic sayings from the Jewish and black classmates. To this day I have a note on the back of ATA fraternity plege card from my good friend Robert Dewitt Jackson. His roomate was Clarke Gable Lovell, also a cool guy. The dorm was full of veterans who seemed to be able to party and study at the same time. This was a feat that I could not master By my sophmore year, I was becoming a hardend party person. My first roomie this year was a buddy from home, Bill Romines, now deceased. Bill was a jock and a good student. I however, having learned the system provided myself with classes that were timed to let me have more time than I needed to do my studying if you get my drift. Now I can't remember if it was this or my freshman year that the panty raids started, but that also helped in my early demise from the Universtiy. By the time I was missing my 10 am classes I new I had to make a decision. I went home. I since continued my education while working, but never got a degree. I will never know now if I would have been better off, but I do know that I have succeded in spite of myelf with determination and persistance. Next: Off to work! Workplace: Let me start at the very beginning. Who didn't have a paper route in the "old days." I carried the Indianapolis Star. I worked at Blacky Blackburns Drive In Rresturant my first summer before starting High School. With a little pull from my Grandfather, I landed the job of all high school jobs, at Lorey's Ben Franklin 5& 10 store. I became a legend there after four years. Since graduation and after leaving IU, I held some Mickey Mouse jobs in Lawrenceburg, IN. Milkman,Kroger stock man, Liquor store clerk, etc. It was during this period that I enrolled in the Weaver Airline School in Kansas City. After graduation I went to work for Delta Airlines at Chicago's Midway Airport. It was here that I got the autograph of Elvis Presly as he was returning to Memphis after plugging his first movie premier in the Windy City. I think it was Love Me Tender. The autograph has since disappeared, probably into the hand of Stella Zaheriko who after finding out that I had it bugged me to no end. From Delta I moved on to Lake Central Airlines in Indianapolis. Man the airline business at the time was like IU without even thinking about class. What a party. It was in Indy that I met my wife of 56 years. She was a reservationist for Lake Central, which eventually became part of US Air. On becoming pregnant and losing an income it became apparent that I would have to find a good paying job instead of a party one. This led me to work for the Underwood Corporation in Cincinnati, Ohio. Olivetti had owned Underwood for a couple of years at this time and eventually changed the name to Olivetti Corporation of America. I spent 19 years with Olivetti and draw a pension from them now. The major companies after Olivetti were Memorex, Sharp Electronics, and Olympia AEG. After Olympia downsized me, I was to old to get a real job. I tried very hard for 18 months, but I couldn't overcome my age. I drove a school bus for a couple of years, quit that and started driving for the Westerville Senior Center. I retired from the Senior Center in Feb. of '09 after ten great years and not having to recessatate anyone..Now I am completely on the dole. I'm a happy man. Now, go back to the life bio, I bet you missed something. I always wanted to be a truck driver when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were not very helpful.. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have Curly, Lary, and Moe to be able to deal with the day-to-day. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Bob Erdman, because was my mentor. Well, when I could see, it was racing my Mustang around the Mid-Ohio sports car course Doris and I are now fully retired and have an apartment in the independent living section of Friendship Village of Columbus, OH... We moved in on Dec 2, 2013. We are still in relatively good health (my eyes) and enjoying the freedom that FVC gives us.

Hello, I just stumbled upon a FB post where 761 Eads Pkwy home was for sale. Also known as the McLeaster house. Do any of you know what happened? Is there a new owner? What?
I just thought of one that Dad used to use. My sisters should get this one. HOW do you get down off an elephant?
I got sad news today. John Jehn passed. The two brothers I knew best were Jeff and John. They ran the store when it was in downtown Cincy. John went on to do his thing in their service department while Jeff just retired a c

The race is on my mind. I remember when we lived in Indy every day in May had something to do with the race. I miss it.

Wow! I am impressed and happy. I have four folks who missed me ready and the day is young.

Hello. You folks that like what I post why don't you say something that will inspire me. What is happening in your neighborhood? I think you know that we are in lockdown here at FVC so we need some stimulation. It is almos
Doris wants me to thank all of you for thinking of her on her 82nd birthday.
Bummer, It's supper time. When it's five Doris thinks we should eat whether you are hungry or not. I am just tasting the last sip of my toddy. I will doze off during Jeopardy. Maybe Wheel of Fortune also. 😌
What a beautiful day. We walked through the FVC woods and then sat in the sun while sitting six feet apart from one of our neighbors. OH, I almost forgot this was the day of the famous march. You know the one. Don't you?
Just waiting for that knock. It should be soon now.
Early dinner tonight. I did tell you that we are pretty much staying in our rooms, didn't I? Well, we can walk outside or in the hallways so it's not all bad. I have not spent much time on here for the last few days. I am g
