James's Story
Life
I joined the army in May 1980 to the surprise of many people. I was trained as a prisoner of war interrogator and attended the Defense Language Institute, where I studied Korean for a year. After a tour in Hawaii, with two trips to Korea, I returned to DLI, where I studied Czech. I was then sent to Germany in July 1984. After serving 18 months along the Czech border in the city of Cham, I was transferred to Coburg, which is at the northern tip of Bavaria near what was then the border to the German Democratic Republic. While in Coburg I married a local German woman named Anja and we remained in Germany after my discharge in 1989. After 18 months we returned to the US to complete my education. o Coburg, where we now live with our two sons, Daniel and David. Both of our sons are bi-lingual. I speak English to them and my wife German. Shortly after our return to Germany, I began working on my first computer book, which was published in 1996. have written five others (one in German) and I am working on a new one. I have published articles in several computer magazines and wrote the "Nuthin' but Net" column for SCO World magazine until other obligations forced me to stop. For the first five years in Germany, I worked for a manufacturer of industrial machines headquartered in Coburg, with offices all over the world. Because of my proficiency in English, I got to visit many of them. Currently, I am the help desk manager for a company that is the largest Germany developer of Internet applications for on-line stock trading and similar e-commerce applications.
