Most remembered incident:
I was living in and operating the map room in the front a hooch during the Tet offensive, 1968.
I had befriended a small dog, "Silver Bullet", that slept near my feet every night.

blanket, barking and raising all kinds of racket to wake me up.
In the distance I heard the sirens, left my bunk and entered an inside bunker made from drums and sand bags. Not 1 minute later a 122mm rocket took out the whole back end of the building and peppered the room with debris and shrapnel.
I still have a few pieces from the bunk area. Never know when it pays to feed stray animals.
