James's Story

Life Greetings from abroad. I'm still in the military and have been for almoat 20 years. I'm a professional Operations Coordinator (Army Chief Warrant Officer 3) in the Defense Attache System which means I run all aspects of Operations within Defense Attache Offices worldwide. I am currently stationed at the American Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Prior to this assignment I was an instructor at the Military Attache School in Washington, DC and prior to that served at the Embassies in London, England; Seoul, Korea and at the Embassy in Bonn, Germany. Back in my old job with the Navy I served in Panama City, Panama (love the tropics), Yokosuka and Kami Seya, Japan (love sushi). While in Yokosuka I had the opportunity to travel extensively througout Asia and have since done most of Europe. I met my lovely wife Emma while at the Embassy in Bonn and we were married in Thailand at the British Ambassador's residence in 1997. She's a native Londoner so it was great to be back in her hometown and close to at least one set of grandparents. Our daughter Sophie was born in Seoul, Korea in Nov 2000 and she's the apple of her Daddy's eye. School Moved around quite a bit until my father retired from the U.S. Navy in 1983. I attended elementary school in Rhode Island (Melville Elementary - K), Virginia (South Norfolk Portlock Elementary 1-3)(Chesapeake Southwestern Elementary and Western Branch Junior High 4-7) and then moved to Upstate NY (Mohawk Centr...Expand for more
al School) where I completed my high-school education. Military Left Mohawk in 1987 and have never looked back. Left for Navy bootcamp in September and then spent 6 months at NMITC in Dam Neck, VA. Left for my first assignment in Kami Seya, Japan in May of 88'. Served two tours in Japan (Kami Seya and Yokosuka) and then transferred to Panama City, Panama. Most rewarding tour (so far) of my current 17 year career but all good things must come to an end so I applied for a position within the Defense Attache System (DAS). The purpose of our office (Defense Attache Office) is to serve in American Embassies around the globe and act as the Ambassador's sole advisor on political/military affairs and also act as liaison between the Department of Defense and the host nation's militaries. My first assignment with the DAS was at the American Embassy in Bonn, Germany. Here I met my lovely wife while she was assigned to the British Embassy in Bonn. We were married in Bangkok, Thailand in December 1997 and departed Germany together in 1999. This is when I made a life/career change like no other. I left the Navy and enlisted in the Army and then attended Warrant Officer Candidate School in order to serve my country as an Attache Technician and a full-time appointment to the Defense Attache System. My first tour as an Operations Coordinator was in Seoul, Korea where my daughter Sophie Louise was born and I'm currently serving at the U.S. Embassy in London.
