James's Story

Life I am currently living in Jakarta, Indonesia. How did I end up there? It is a long story. Sit back and read a spell. Where to start... I spent quite a few years after high school goofing around trying to go to college and figure out what I wanted to do with my life. After the Cold War ended with the fall of the U.S.S.R, the demand for aerospace engineers (my chosen major) declined. I wavered in that choice and dropped out of college. I worked a bunch of small jobs in/around Minneapolis/St Paul Minnesota while contemplating my future. When I think about that time, a song comes to mind "Life in a Northern Town" in which you will hear the line: "... Took a year off of college and never went back." While I was trying to set a course on life, I joined the Air Force Reserves and got to visit England and Panama. In the summer of 1991, I moved down to Southern California to live with my good buddy, Trent Baker. He was in the Navy and was stationed at Miramar in San Diego, California. I worked a bunch of odd jobs there (cleaning windows on the skyscrapers of downtown San Diego, security, etc.) while trying to figure out what I really wanted to do. I ended up taking a job with TRW-Technar in Irwindale, California. I started as an engineering technician working on airbag sensors in the R&D department. Eventually I moved into the crash-test analysis department. TRW ended up moving its crash-test operations to Michigan and I chose to remain in California. I accepted a job as a record/scanner operator for a post-production facility in Hollywood. I got to work in film industry and see my name up on the big screen. Have you seen the Matrix films "Revolutions" and "Evolutio...Expand for more
n"? My name appears in the credits as well as a few other films. After a few years as an operator, I moved into the software division writing software for the scanners/recorders. I write applications to allow the users to interface with the scan/record machines and streamline their operations. During my employment there, I returned to school, having finally discovered my true passion, programming. I graduated with my Bachelors in the year 2000. I met my lovely wife in Southern California and was married in 1997. We were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Jezneel and Jenica. In 2004 we decided to start our own business in Indonesia, my wife's country of origin. She and the girls moved to Jakarta to start the import business. I followed them in 2005. My wife and some of her family import clothing from China. In order to better communicate with them, I attended a university in Guangzhou China to learn Chinese. Since then, I have been living and working in Jakarta. I help run an embroidery shop where we sell embroidery machines and also perform embroidery work for my wife and her family members. I still work for the Hollywood company. They were kind enough to ask me to work from overseas. We just built a new home in Pluit area of northern Jakarta. We intend to live here for a few more years and then either return to the U.S.A. so our daughters can experience high school in the States or move to Singapore. That's my life in a nut-shell. You can reach me via email at ross.james.s AT gmail DOT com. UPDATED: January 2009. I am no longer working for the California-based firm. I ended my employment there in 2008. Currently I am looking to open a new business in Jakarta.
