James's Story

Life After finishing playing football my senior year, I started gymnastics in the Spring of 1978 at a small club in Richardson with my brothers who were in college. They had already taught me handstands and back handsprings. I started working out every day and was hooked. I turned down a partial engineering scholarship to SMU to take a partial scholarship to UTA in Aerospace Engineering, since SMU didn't have an aero program. UTA actually had some pretty good gymnastics instructors over the years, not really coaches since there was not an NCAA program but just a sports club team. My instructors included a USA team coach and a Japanese national team member (who also was a PhD in exercise physiology - we were his lab rats too). We formed the Texas Gymnastics Conference in 1979 to set up a competitive conference for club teams at TX universities (UT, A&M, Tech, etc.). My brother still runs the conference and I help out. Anyway, I climbed my way to the top of the bottom in gymnastics. I won parallel bars and vault and finished second all around at my last conference state meet in 1983. After I graduated with my aero engineerig degree and started working, I could afford to travel so I competed at some open meets for fun in other parts of the country. In fact my last competion (to date) was in 2000 at the Senior Olympics in LA (sounds big but it wasn't - just a bunch of old guys - but the rope climb event is still awesome!). Funny thing is that in 1981 I started judging and turned out to be better at it than I was a competitor (which isn't saying too much). So although I couldn't do a lot of the big tricks I could judge them (it's easy being a critic). I've had a men's international judges rating since 1985. I judge a lot of junior and high school meets, some NCAA and college, and some international meets, though just smaller international meets here in the US. No Olympics yet, and that's another story.... Fort Worth hosted ...Expand for more
the World Championships for gymnastics in 1979 so my brtothers and I worked as team coordinators for Mexico and Spain. I worked with Mexico and they finished last (but that left more time to drink tequila). In 1981, my brothers and I were gymnastics extras in a movie called Split Image with Peter Fonda, Karen Allen, James Woods, Brian Denehy, and Michael O'Keefe (the caddy in Caddy Shack). It was fun and maybe you can find it on the $1 clearance table at a video store (but most were just thrown out). Anyway, along with aero engineering classes I took flight test courses at UTA and decided I wanted to do some flying and test airplanes. I had worked at Love Field and Addison airports during my freshman year of college then at my dad's company, Vought aircraft, during the other summers. Everything from cutting grass to writing software for missiles. My dad had retired at 65 when I was a junior at TJ so he was not there and actually had nothing to do with my working there, other than telling me they hired engineering students in the summers. When I graduated, I was hired as a flight test engineer at General Dynamics in Fort Worth in 1984. I have flown some in the back seat of F-16s and other aircraft. We became part of Lockheed in 1992. Other projects I've worked on include the Cessna 208, EC-130, YF-22, and X-35. NOVA did a documentary that won an Emmy about the X-35 competition with the X-32. It is called the Battle of the X Planes. We were kind of disappointed in the final product, but it was fun to work on the project and with the NOVA dudes, as we called them. My wife, 4 kids, and I moved back to Fort Worth in 2001 from California (CA). We have been back and forth from CA a few times over the years. Our two older girls were born in CA and our twins were born in TX. I hope you can make it to the 30th Reunion 27-29 June 2008. We are setting up a great weekend with several events for everyone to be included. See you there!!
