James's Story
Life
My wife Claire and I have been married for 30 years. We have five adult children that I affectionately refer to as "hers, mine and the Maharajah's". Our oldest two daughters are Claire's girls from her first marriage; our oldest son is mine from my first marriage; and our youngest son and daughter were adopted from India. We are proud of the fine adults that each has become. We also are blessed with seven grandchildren.
After 30 years in secondary education, I retired in 1998. For my last 28 school terms I was a college and career counseling specialist in a public high school of 2200 in the northwest Chicago suburb of Palatine, IL. Since then I have been involved in building my own computers and supporting our five children and their families.
Claire joined me in retirement in 2000 after her long career in elementary education. We enjoy the outdoors and have been able to ski quite a bit since this has been a common family activity for all. In 2002 we finally took the trip to Europe that we had thought about for a long time. We visited my paternal roots in Plzen, Czech Republic and Claire's in Sulzheim, Germany as well as touring Germany and Austria.

College
My higher education began at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. There I was active in the TKE Fraternity and played on the football team. I started as a pre-engineering major but switched to education and English.
After two years I transferred to Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. My transfer and major change necessitated adding an additional year to my undergraduate experience. At Principia I was involved in building the campus radio station from scratch and became its first station manager. I also played three years of football and baseball.
I then attended the University of Chicago Graduate School of Education to study guidance and counseling. After several detours I achieved my Masters degree.
Workplace
I enjoyed thirty years as a high school guidance counselor. I began at Leelanau Schools in Michigan for one year and then was involved with a business built around my patented water basketball game for swimming pools. I then went for a year at Lake Park High School in Roselle, IL; but the greatest part of my career in counseling was at Palatine High School in Palatine, IL where I spent 28 years as the college and career counseling specialist. I retired from Palatine in 1998.
