James's Story
I figured it was about time to update this profile, so here goes. First off, I did not relocate to San Luis Obispo to attend graduate school; I am staying right here in LA County, and am now officially a candidate for a Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from CSU Los Angeles, starting in the Spring Quarter of 2009. I guess I just couldn't tear myself away from my beloved hometown of Whittier.
I also left the State Senate at the end of January 2009 in order to attend graduate school. It was a difficult decision (especially in this economy), but I am heartbroken at what has become of the legislature; for reasons of its own making, it has lost the respect of just everyone in the state. So, when my former employer, Senator Bob Margett, retired after two terms in the upper house, so did I. I love the institution and state government, and hope to possibly return someday if it makes much-needed organizational changes. We shall see.
In the meantime, I am turning my attention to new adventures in life--which is a nice way of saying that I am currently unemployed! I do like life outside ...Expand for more
of the public eye for the first time in over 16 years; I don't have to worry about being out grocery shopping and finding myself stopped by someone telling me their opinion on the latest current event; nor do I any longer have to fill out all the mandatory paperwork listing my assets for public consumption.
Before my 10 years working in the state house, I worked for a Congressman for 6 years in the mid-1990's and briefly served as senior aide to a County Supervisor in Monterey County. I lived in Salinas for 9 months in 1998-99, and it made me appreciate Southern California that much more when I returned home. I also will celebrate 12 years in September 2009 as a UCLA Football season-ticket holder. Go Bruins!!!
For those of you who remember me liking pretty much all sports, that has changed. I now only follow college football, the Lakers, and my beloved Bruins. I also love to read (my weakness is buying books from Amazon.com), the race track (picking horses is a rather new hobby for me), and of course I can be found several days a week hiking in our local foothills around Whittier.
