James (Jim)'s Story

Hi to all those I knew at EHS. Can't believe the 55 year anniversary is approaching. I see some names of people I knew in classes, Interact or Exchange clubs or that came to EHS from Howard JHS like I did. Those were great years from 1964-67. This Classmates site popped up on my computer recently so I looked to see what's happened in the many years since graduation. I attended the 15 year reunion and met some folks I didn't know at Edgewater when I was there. But decided to skip the 50 year event...seems like just yesterday that was held. I went to college like most Eagles did back then. OJC, VCC, UCF, and Rollins. Continued on at East Carolina and NC State in North Carolina. They call me doctor now. Most of my teachers at EHS are probably rolling over in their graves. Spent ten years in business world at Merrill Lynch, Xerox, Kawneer, etc. Then changed to another career that let me stay home more. Got unlucky with a #6 in the 1969 military draft and served my two years in the Army, like most of the guys I knew in high school. The Vietnam GI Bill paid for 4 of the 7 degrees I earned....and I only had a EHS General Diploma! Like many of you, I had a "starter wife" at age 28 and got divorced after 3 years. She didn't go to EHS! But at that age I got what I deserved...a real loser. When that was over, a few years later I moved out of state and haven't regretted it yet. I've lived in several cities in North Carolina for about 40 years. Sold my house last year for an awesome amount and now trying to decide what to do next. Looking at Florida, Texas, or Portugal to move to. I also spent 28 years in the military...ten+ in the Army and another 18 in the Air Force. Only two were active duty at first but at 35 I joined the reserves/guard. Worked at the highest levels of those branches and traveled the world. Of course, two more wars came along. eeing the world made me realize America isn't the only place to live on this planet. Before the Covid fiasco I wanted to buy an RV and travel the US to places I hadn't been yet. Now, forget it. I'll travel Europe. I saw Larry Troutman's profile and it seems like 57 is so young now and that was only 15 years ago. My family goes back to the mid-1800s in central Florida but it's changed and so did I. It was a great place to live before Disney came...and I was in the opening day parade in October 1971 (Babes in Toyland). Very little has gone the way I thought it would on that beautiful, sunny day of May 31, 1967! The 1970s were the dark ages of my life but 1980 on has been great. Unlike many of you, I'm not a grandfather (who wants to sleep with a grandmother?) Although I've been remarried for 38 years now, our son was a Marine officer who volunteered for one mission he shouldn't have and has had medical problems since 2017. Like me, he saw the world (and didn't have time for serious relationships). We live with him now until we decide what to do next. We'll be coming to Florida in the next few weeks on a recon mission to see what and where we could relocate. February 25, 2022 Went to Florida last Friday. Made my way down to O'ville on Tuesday. Drove down 17-92 from Daytona to Colonial Town. Nothing but traffic bumper-to-bumper. So much change I didn't stay very long. Went up through counties west of Orlando (Leesburg, etc) looking for a place to maybe live. Again, traffic was horrific, prices ridiculous, and stupid HOA rules. My German Shepherd "Trooper" isn't considered an acceptable pet. I shortened my planned ten-day trip and returned to NC. I can't even say FLA is a nice place to visit any longer. I may look at north Florida in Pensacola but I've nixed every place below Gainesville. I guess Tom Wolfe was right "you can't go home again."
