James's Story
Life
Life seems to move so quickly as we grow older, but there are always new adventures to enjoy and people to meet. My life has been filled with diverse experiences and friendships. After nearly 15 years in the Navy, I resigned my commission in Jan 2005 to enter the seminary. Currently, I am pursuing my vocation to the Catholic priesthood for the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. God-willing, I hope to be ordained in May 2009, and then return to the Navy as a Chaplain. I am studying at Theological College at The Catholic University of America. One of the most satisfying things in life is reconnecting with old friends, so if you find yourself in DC, please contact me. God bless and peace...
School
I attended Madison High School in San Diego, CA, graduating in the class of 1986. I was in the band all 3 years, serving as President during my senior year. During my junior year, we traveled to Lucerne, Switzerland for the 'World of Music' Festival--a great trip! This was my first trip to Europe. I was also on the Speech and Debate team, and I had a small part in the school's production of 'Dino' (anyone remember Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart?"). Those were some memorable years at Madison...
College
I attended the University of Notre Dame from Fall 1986 through Spring 1990. I graduated with a BA in Economics in May 1990 with a concentration in Math. While at ND, I was a NROTC scholarship midshipman, so I was commissioned an Ensign in the USN the day before my gradu...Expand for more
ation. I lived in Keenan Hall for the first 3 years of college, then I resided in Dismas House for my senior year (a halfway house for ex-cons and students--what a great combination!). I was a member of a song and dance ensemble (read "show choir") called the "Shenanigans" for 3 years (a student-run organization). Also, I was on the Junior Parents Weekend Executive Committee as the Mass Chairman, and I led the music ministry for the Sunday night Masses in my dorm chapel. Lots of good times at ND! GO IRISH!
Military
I was in the Navy for nearly 15 years as a Surface Warfare Officer. My area of specialty was amphibious operations. I served on numerous amphibious assault ships, including a LST, LHD, LSD and LPD. My two most prestigious tours were as the Operations Officer onboard USS OAK HILL (LSD 51) (homeported in Little Creek, VA) and USS JUNEAU (LPD 10) (forward-deployed in Sasebo, Japan). I attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where I earned my MS degree in Operations Analysis. My most memorable and enjoyable tour was at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. As a Military Instructor in the Math department, I taught first year calculus to the plebes and youngsters (read "freshmen and sophomores"). In addition to teaching, I was the Officer Rep for the Men's Varsity Water Polo team, and I was one of 4 readers of names at the Graduation Ceremony for two years in a row. After two great years at USNA, I resigned my commission in Jan 2005 to enter the seminary.
