Jamie's Story

Well...if I had written this a year ago, it would be very different. I met Cheri as a freshman at NCSU (she was my right guide in marching band...she used to say she was in charge from the start!) and by December 1 of that year we were dating...by December 15 we told folks we were going to get married when I graduated...and that's exactly what happened. After graduation, Cheri took jobs with the NC Symphony, NCSU Arts & Activities and the NC Art Museum, all as Box Office Manager. I, on the other hand, struggled for a while but eventually found a job as a mechanical engineer. After a short stint at AP Parts, then 2 years at Aeroquip (with both of us with 50+ mile commutes each way) I took a job with Raychem in Fuquay and we finally were able to settle in Angier. Then, in May 1991, I found out how small you can make a Triumph Spitfire by crashing head on to a BMW, both doing about 55 mph. Thankfully, the other driver only had a few stitches...I was in the hospital for a while and confined to a hospital bed at home for over 3 months. Changes one's outlook on life, to put it mildly. Did NOT cure me of driving British cars, however. At 31 years old I decided to go back to school and got an MSM (now MBA) from NCSU in new product development (I used to think a lot of the school until they let me back in -- they KNEW my undergrad grades...) and went to work for John Deere. I now have 10+ years in at Deere and am a product manager in Professional Mowing. We also built a house to cut down on Cheri's commute that's located near Willow Springs near Highway 42 in southeastern Wake County. Nothing ostentatious, but it's home. Picked the development because they allowed external buildings in addition to an attached garage. By this point, Cheri had gotten to be a pretty darn good glass artist (both flat stained glass and fusing) and the air-conditioned garage meant I could work on cars while she worked on her glass. Meanwhile, Cheri had gone back and gotten her professional internet webmasters certificate from NCSU and had changed fields -- she took a job with the NC Dept. of Tourism managing the database behind visitnc dot com. This also freed up her evenings, which was great! We had the perfect marriage...but decided to go one step further, and adopted a beautiful little girl. over 7 months old. I had almost no experience with babies and actually went to a great class named 'Baby 101' sponsored by the adoption agency to get ready. It was VERY exciting during the waiting process, but the paperwork was incredible, most of it required by our government, not Guatemala. It's amazing how hard it is to adopt in this country, although our adoption agency (Mandala out of Chapel Hill) was absolutely fabulous. We even purchased a family Triumph (yes, to those of you that know me, I'm still driving British cars...there are currently 5 in the driveway/garage). The refurbishment of the Triumph station wagon (!) is chronicled at 2000estate dot blogspot dot com if you're interested. Ally's arrival also put a stop to my autocrossing, which was something I had enjoyed very much. It was fun beating (sometimes) kids in their rice rockets with a Spitfire that was 19 years older than they were. I managed a 2003 class championship before 'retiring'. Cheri was a terrific Mommy and had really embraced mommyhood...I guess when one waits as long as we did there's a lot of pent up stuff just bursting to get out! I can't express the joy of watching the two of them together. Ally progressed quickly and is a basically happy little girl that's cute enough that I figure I'll need a baseball bat by the time she's a teenager. Lucky she has none of her father's genes! This is when it gets hard to type...through the tears. On April 29, 2008, Cheri collapsed due to cardiac arrest while sitting beside me in our living room...totally without any advance problems. Although I performed CPR and the EMT's got there extremely quickly and were able to restart her heart...it was too late. She died May 8, 2008 at Wake Med without regaining consciousness. So...after 25 years together...I'm now on my own with our beautiful daughter, trying to be both Mom and Dad. I'm thankful to have wonderful friends and family to help and support...and I pray that no one ever reading this feels the grief I feel. I welcome all contact from friends/acquaintances/whomever, old & new. E-mails are very welcome. Sleeping hasn't been coming easily so there's plenty of time for me to answer e-mails... I guess there's nothing else to say right now. Maybe I'll update this at some point in the future, when the wound isn't so raw. Jamie Palmer, 7/7/08
