Jane's Story

Life I was born in Sacramento and lived here until 1976 when my husband and my two daughters and I moved to Davis. I thought Davis was so far away. I actually cried for a week! Then I met my neighbors and became a happy camper and realized that the drive from there to Sacramento wasn't so bad after all. It wasn't long before I thought that Davis was the best place to live and raise my children. We only lived in Davis until 1978. Next move was to New Orleans, LA. We lived there for 14 (1978-1992)years. It was a real adjustment living in the South. I actually felt that I lived a shelted life in Sacramento and Davis. Things were so different there. I started working for the phone company(South Central Bell and AT&T) after living there for 3 months. Then divestiture came (the break-up of the phone companies)and job losses. I only had 7 years of services so I was laid off. Then I worked for Dean Witter Reynolds for 3 years as secretary/sales assistant to 4 brokers. That was interesting until Black Monday. That was too much stress for me so I quit with only a short notice in advance! Next job which was offered to me the next day after quiting the brokerage firm and it was with the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans. I really enjoyed that job also. My family (husband and daughters)and I had converted to Judaism in 1980. We were already established in the Jewish community so I knew most of the people I worked with. I was at the Federation for 3 years. Next move was to Beer Sheva, Israel. This move was just my husband and I. I had only visited Israel once and that was in January,1991. I experienced the first scud missles that came into Israel from Saddam Hussein at the beginning of the Gulf war. The sirens going off and having to go into the sealed off room with our gas masks! Wow! That was a scary experience! Not knowing the language was another problem. We were staying with a doctor friend of ours in Haifa who had only been there for less than ...Expand for more
a year. She wasn't that familiar with the language either(she was Canadian). All I wanted to do was leave and get back to New Orleans ASAP!! Easier said than done. We had to wait 2 days before we could leave. I swore I would never go back again! February 1992 we were preparing for our move to Israel. This was something my husband wanted to do. If it was hard for me to leave Sacramento when we moved to Davis, you can only imagine how I felt about moving across the world. We were only there 2 days and I realized I loved it there. It is nothing like you see on the news. I had a job after 6 months as an English secretary for a large company (Dead Sea Bromine Group). I worked in the sales office. This was really interesting. I spoke to people from all over the world such as Russia, Turkey, Morroco, India, Greece and many more. Our company also had offices in other countries. My life was great! No one thought it was strange that we were black and Jewish. We were only thought of as Americans. I adjusted to my life there much quicker than I did when we moved to New Orleans. I left many friends in Israel and we still keep in contact. If it were not for my husband and I divorcing, I would still be there. But we did and I ended up back in Sacramento. I never dreamed that I would live here again after being away for 26 years. I did come back every couple of years for visits. I have been back in the U.S. for 3 years now. I've had to start my life over again but this time it was harder doing it alone. But I did it! I now work for Re/Max Gold as a secretary/escrow coordinator. I don't plan to move again. My next move will be to an old folks home and that won't be for many years to come. I plan to work until I am 70 plus. I feel very young still. I think I got stuck in the 60's or 70's and didn't move on mentally (smile). I am healthy and happy and actually enjoying my single life. It seems I have gone full circle ending up where I started 60 years ago.
