Jane's Story

Life One son and one ex-husband. Longer bio in the profile section. At least there was - it seems to have disappeared... so.... Life potholes... back in Saginaw... After DMHS, went to Kansas and received AA in Business Administration from small, private college. Returned to Michigan and got BA in Business Admin from Spring Arbor University (near Jackson). Traveled to Colorado to visit friends and job hunt. Recruiter said he would feed me, clothe me, and pay off my college loans, so enlisted in the U.S. Army. Served in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, California (one year), and Seoul, Korea (two years). Upon discharge, joined the Michigan Army National Guard - was in the Midland unit for almost four years. Went back to school using my VA education benefits to complete requirements for teaching certification. Taught in Vanderbilt, Michigan - high school and adult ed business -for two years, and then got tired of the long winters! Moved to Kansas, where I was out of education for 14 years - worked in human resources for 8 years, as well as several other positions - secretarial, customer service, and banking. Went back into teaching three years ago - high school special ed, primarily with students with learning disabilities. The schedule really works well with my son, who is now in middle school. He was still in elementary school when the teaching opportunity was presented. It is so nice to be on the same schedule! Working in the business community, there is little flexibility for time off at spring break, during Christmas vacation, and in the summer months. He has two half-sisters (my step-daughters), who are 22 and 24. One is a senior in college, and the other is a para at an elementary school. She has a son, who is 4, so I am actually a step-grandma, too! My son's dad and I were divorced nearly five years ago, however, the girls have remained close, so I still call them my step-daughters. Sorry, this was longer than I anticipated. FYI - The folks (John & Myrna Cammin) and my brother are all still in Saginaw. We visited last summer for nearly a month, and we're looking forward to visiting again this summer. School Even though I had fun in high school, since I am currently a high school teacher, I would not want to go back to high school today! Kim (Pesta) Butler and I had fun dressing up during Homecoming Week, and being in drama productions with Bethany Wright and Nancy Harmon. (Bless her, Nancy had a tough time with driver's ed. The teacher knew we were friends, so he thought she would be less nervous if I was the other passenger for the highway driving. Cannot even describe it - not good...) When Nancy died during our senior year, that was especially difficult. Carnations for Valentine's Day was always fun, especially from "Mrs. Williams Cute Freshman" my senior year! (Thank you, Chuck Frink!) Breakfast at my house after prom, when my mom and dad made speciality waffles for numerous couples, was another highlight. It was always somewhat odd, because my parents were teachers in the school system. (That was also why I RARELY skipped school! Got caught once - that was enough! Thanks, Mike Humphreys!) The folks dropped in at our 10th and 20th reunions, and it was neat to see the number of students who were pleased to see them. At our 10th reunion, Mom took essay...Expand for more
s that my classmates wrote when they were freshmen and had her for English entitled "In Ten Years I Will..." Well, enough for now... College Sophomore Year - Taking control of the TV lounge - that was before cable and TVs in individual rooms - so that I could watch Bethany Wright as Miss Michigan on the Miss America Pageant. Junior Year - Interterm in Washington, D.C., was there for the hostage release - tons of busses and yellow ribbons EVERYWHERE - and witnessed Ronald Reagan being sworn in as President. Actually saw George and Barbara Bush and their motorcade on another day. Caught up for a day with Bethany Wright, who was there for an inaugural presentation with the Fred Waring troupe. Dancing at a nightclub in Georgetown. Senior Year - Trips into Jackson, and hitting Taco Bell and/or Hardees, and ALWAYS finishing with BASKIN-ROBBINS! Getting to graduate, because I had a TERRIBLE time getting a C or above in Statistics, which was a requirement for my business major!!! But, after two semesters and a Clep test, I made it to graduation. Returning to college after the military was a very different experience. As a non-traditional student, I lived in an apartment, instead of in the dorms. I also had a full-time job, and got straight A's, which was not the case the first time around!! Since returning to teaching, had to add an endorsement, plus am about to continue working on my master's degree. So, with this as my profession, I'll continue to be a student... Workplace First job - receptionist at Golden Touch Beauty Salon on Center Road - right by DMHS. Senior year worked as a voc ed student doing clerical work at local insurance company. Odd jobs during college - waitress, janitor, secretary - nurses' aide at Saginaw Community Hospital in the summers. Military - telecommunications center operator and supervisor. Secretary. Telemarketer/Collections agent for utility companies. Sergeant in the Michigan Army National Guard. Substitute teacher - all levels. Canoe livery driver and "schlepper." High school and adult education teacher - business - accounting, typing, computers. College admissions secretary. Waitress. Substitute teacher. Office Manager for a fish farm. Customer Service Rep (CSR) for Chamber of Commerce. Human resources (5 years) and accounting (3 years) for vinyl siding/PVC pipe corporation. CSR/Bank Teller. High school teacher - Special education (primarily LD). Military BASIC: Private First Class (PFC, E-3) at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina AIT (Advanced Individual Training): PFC at Pensacola, Florida (on a Navy base); Specialist (SP4, E-4) at Ft. Gordon, Georgia (near Augusta). PDS (Permanent Duty Stations): SP4 at Ft. Ord, California (near Monterey) - one year; Sergeant (SGT, E-5) - Yongson, Korea (in Seoul) - two years - Blackbelt in Itaewon shopping, Top Secret Clearance, Telecommunications Center Operator and Supervisor, Satellite Site Supervisor, and Honorable Discharge. Michigan Army National Guard: Sergeant in Midland unit for nearly four years. Once Midland unit was deployed to active duty (my position was an "excess" slot), I transferred to a unit in Grayling for my final three months. Worked at Camp Grayling's Ration Distribution Point (RDP) one summer. Honorably discharged ten days prior to the official start of the Desert Storm campaign.
