Janet's Story
My life has truly been an adventure. I'm a free-spirit and have followed my heart (with some guidance from my mind..) along the way. My philosophy - (in the words of the late, great Satchel Paige) "Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like nobody's watching". So far, it's worked for me :).
I am happily married to a wonderful man, Dan and we'll be celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary this March. We have three children - 1 son, Eliot, and 2 daughters, Kealy and Sophia. We recently moved back to NC after living in MO for the past 14 years. It is great to be back in NC!
My children bring me great joy and keep me young at heart. I had them when I was "older" (Eliot was born 1 month before my 35th birthday and Sophia arrived 1 month after my 41st). I love being a mom and cherish every moment I spend with my kids.
I received my Assoc. in Applied Science at the College of the Albemarle in 1981. After a 10-yr break (marriage/divorce) I returned to college and completed my BS in Biochemistry at NCSU. While finishing my undergraduate degree at I worked at NCSU's College ...Expand for more
of Veterinary Medicine in a research lab studying a canine model of (Duchenne) muscular dystrophy. After graduation in 1993 I continued my research in this lab, which subsequently relocated to the University of Missouri-College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia, MO in 1994.
Our lab moved to Chapel Hill in May 2007 and we are now part of the Gene Therapy Center at UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Medicine. I've worked my way up through the ranks from a part-time Work-Study (grant) student at NCSU to a full-time Research Associate and have loved every minute of my job. I met my husband, Dan while working at NCSU and we have worked together ever since (we make a great team!).
As I stated earlier, it truly is great to be back in NC. I have several siblings and my mother living in the state and I'm thankful that we're now close enough to visit them more often. My father passed away in Oct. 2005. I miss him dearly and wish that we had moved back to NC sooner, so we could have spent more time together.
I'm looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and enjoying all the wonderful things to do in this beautiful state.
