Janice's Story
Life
Life after high school has been pretty interesting. When I think about it, I really never image what my life would be like once I entered the "real world". I have had my share of ups and downs, but all in all I have a good life. I'm the first woman from my motherÂs side of the family to graduate high school and the only person on either side of my families to graduate from college. These are milestones I'm most proud of accomplishing.
Attending college was an adventure that has leaded me to where I am now. As an undergraduate I interned in City Council President Pro-Tem Maryann Mahaffey's Office. I continued my education to receive my graduate degree. And now I'm a City Planner with the City of Detroit, City Planning Commission that specializes in Social Policy Issues. There are parts of my work that I really love, like my interaction with Community Organizations in Detroit.
There are times at work that I have a lot social interactions with people. I get to spend time talking to residents about things they want to change in the City. And because of this social interaction at work, I now know what I really want to...Expand for more
do. I want to start my own organization to deal with the social ills of our society. In particular I want to help girls and young women become successful and productive women in society. The high school drop out rate in steady increasing, teen pregnancy is still a problem and girls involvement with violent crime are at record highs, and I want to be apart of the solution to address these issues.
Meanwhile, I had to turn 30 to realize what I want to do with my life. Turning 30 was hard. I spent 6month depressed about turning 30 and I think it was because I was self examining my life. There are things I havenÂt accomplish that I thought I should have my now. Anyway, I got over it and now IÂm on a mission to live out my purpose in life. My purpose is to serve God in everything I do, with a special focus on mentoring and encouraging girls and young women to live out there dream. I believe the mind is a powerful tool that can propel you to greatness. The greatness I strive for is to help other improve there lives. I plan to write a book soon, so remember my name (Janice Tillmon), because you might see me on Oprah one day.
