Janine's Story

What have I been doing? Silkscreen and Awards Company, Horse Trainer and Riding Instructor, Bus Driver, Designer of Equestrian Apparel, Writer and Editor, Graphics/Advertising Design, Residential and Commercial Real Estate Appraiser, Accredited Teacher for New York State Licensing classes for Real Estate Appraising. Web site advertising for Long Island Equine. Hey- 35+ years since high school is a long time! My Story? Here is one from last summer... A Horse Called Blue, Part 1 Its not his real name but I am transfixed by his half blue and half brown eye. The brown part looks into his soul and the blue part reflects the world around it as he sees it. He is a four year old PMU baby, born on this farm from a mother who was a PMU adoptee. His coat is dark and sleek, his head beautifully delicate, sensitive, inquisitive. He is every bit as interested in me as I am in him. His young but mature body is flawless, his legs just right, straight where they should be straight, bending easily where they should bend. I can¿t wait to see him move. My evaluation sessions always start with the owner showing me all the horse has to offer. I want to watch every detail, from their approach, how they interact while grooming, what they do to prepare the horse to be ridden, and the results of the riding experience. The owner is honest and open with me but still a bit wary of someone who proffers up a natural horsemanship training approach. Right away I let her know I am not a high priced fix it today (or even this month) type of trainer. Truthfully, I¿m just not that good. What I do believe in is minimal stress for both the horse and myself. Would a nice sand perfectly groomed round pen be best? Yes, but how many of us backyard people actually have one like that? What I¿ve learned over the years is that I have to work with what I have. Not that I don¿t bring training ¿stuffÂ...Expand for more
¿ with me, but if I need to work with a horse, I need to find a way for it to happen in the confines of the farm where it is located. Myself and the horse need to stay safe, sound and sane. Notice how I said ¿myself¿ first. I¿m not interested in training dangerous horses. The best way to describe who I like to train is the word ¿frustrated.¿ The frustrated rider, and usually the frustrated horse that goes along with them. What came first, the chicken or the egg? I luck out this time; the horse actually lives in a round pen! I think this has to be part of my plan for my future farm. The ground is not good, uneven, hard as a rock, and there are some sharp rocks in there too. I do my best to kick out the pointy ones prior to working each morning. The round pen is a bit bigger than my own and I find it difficult to stand in the middle to work the horse, who, by the way, has no idea who I am or why I¿m suddenly in his bedroom/bathroom/kitchen. The evaluation session tells me all I need to know about the horse to decide he is exactly the horse I need for my summer program. He has a playful personality, puts everything near him in his mouth, steals anything you leave in reach, and steps up into his owner¿s personal space. She thinks of it as affection, I think of it as disrespect. For the first time I am training a horse as well as training my advanced students to train horses. They will learn how to start horses and actually be my ¿jockeys¿ on my trainees. Thank goodness Kayla rides a bucking horse on a regular basis! If I have my way though- I will not need her. Certainly not for this horse, who accepts his rider, and stands perfectly still. Well- still except for grabbing the reins and having them in his mouth the whole time. This begins his favorite game, tug of war. He plays it every time he comes near a human. Stay tuned for Part 2! Giddy-Up, Janine
