Jason's Story

Life Hmmm...Over the past 21 years....lets see: Did 4 years at OSU, escaped after 4 years in the dorms capped by two years as an RA in the 'Towers' with a Bachelors in Poli Sci and Spanish. Spent a lucrative year as a bank teller in Columbus. Ick. I was down to my last few sellable units of plasma when the Government called me to interview for a position with the Centers for Disease Control. I thought it would be cool to make a living talking to prostitutes and IV drug users, and it was for the first two years in the worst parts of Chicago. I transferred to Cleveland in 1993 and talked to those same peoples' cousins for another six years. Investigated STD and HIV cases, hung out in the women's jail and did a study on STD prevalence in recently incarcerated women. Began working on my Master's in Public Health at Tulane. Found out why my 5 year old niece called it "gradual school". Transferred with a promotion back to Chicago in October 1999 where I helped run the Tuberculosis Elimination program. Earlier this year, I left government service to avoid a relocation to Los Angeles and now worked for HMSA, the local Blue Cross/Blue Shield Health Insurance Carrier for a year before becoming a supervisor in the US Postal Service. Somewhere along the line I fell in love, got married, fell out of love, got unmarried, fell in love again, and now I'm pretty settled in with a wonderful family consisting of my 9 year old blue-eyed ...Expand for more
bombshell named Rebecca, her little sisters Sarah Kaiulani (3), Hannah Noelani (2) and their lovely Mommy Elinor. College I wish I knew where some of the most excellent friends I made are now - Dan Waugh, Bill Schmalhofer, if you you read this please drop me a line! Katy Reaves and Ryan Wendler, too! Stephen R. Jones, Jerome Woods (Ross House Directors) I'd like to hear from you as well...Those two years in Ross as an RA were the toughest and probably most important two years of my life...thanks guys! Workplace PHA Boot Camp, Sept,1991: 8 weeks of bookwork in VD investigation under the watchful eye of Clayton G. Koher (now with ATSDR) at the 13th Street Clinic in Chicago, followed by stints at Bundesen, Mile Square and Englewood Clinics. Hunted around the west and south sides of Chicago for syphilitics and gonorrhea patients. Oh, the Joy! Transferred to Cleveland in '93; worked the field for a few years (same stuff + HIV) and then started doing more surveillance and administrative stuff which led to a great opportunity in the TB Branch in '99. Moved back to Chicago to work with the legendary (at least to me) John Kuharik and the soon-to-be-legendary Chris Caudill. In '02 I caught an amazing break that sent me to Hawaii where I was Public Health Advisor to the TB Branch. I will always be proud of my career as a Public Health Advisor, and I hope to get back into a career that is as challenging and rewarding and being a PHA.
