Jeff's Story

Life What an amazing journey it has been! After graduating from Clarkson I went to U. of T. for 2 years studying Economics. Going into my 3rd year I decided that a general business degree wasn't what I wanted to do. I bought myself a computer when I was 11 years old and have been using them ever since, so why not make a career out of it? Starting my 3rd year I went into the Computer Science program, but quickly discovered the program at U. of T. wasn't what I was looking for. The field needed hands on experience in programming and networking, not theory about a programming language called Turing written by a professor at the University! I dropped the program. Looking at other schools, I picked DeVry in Mississauga since I was able to get a degree rather than a diploma. I knew all through high school that I wanted to move to the U.S., specifically Southern California, and if you want a company to sponsor you, you had better have a degree. DeVry is an OK school and I learned a lot of good skills there, but if I had to do it all over again I probably would have picked Western or some other major University. For my final semester I moved to Long Beach, CA and graduated from DeVry in Long Beach. Before moving to California I married my high-school sweet heart Melissa Tate in June, 1998. It was a great wedding with friends and family and a beautiful day. The day after the honeymoon I left for California and Melissa stayed in Toronto. I graduated with highest honors and a Bachelor of Computer Science in October 1998. I landed my first job that December doing Network Support for the City of Los Angeles. Melissa joined me in SoCal that January and we have been happily married ever since. I stayed at the City of L.A. for 6 months and by the end I couldn't wait to get out of there. But it gave me some experience that I brought with me to Fox Sports in Santa M...Expand for more
onica where I stayed for just over 1.5 years. Living in SoCal, we got to see some of the most beautiful places in North America. From the sunny beaches to Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, San Diego, Orange County and more. Being close to Las Vegas, Utah, and Denver was nice too. It was an amazing time. After Fox, I landed a job at Microsoft and they moved us up to the east side of Seattle. Microsoft is an awesome company to work for and they treat their employees well. I'm still working here and I plan to for years to come. I have specialized in Systems Management Server which is a desktop/server management suite for software change management and Inventory in a corporate environment and am Tech Lead for the WA team. The work rarely gets boring! The Seattle area and Washington state are a great spot to raise kids. The city has low crime compared to places like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Boston, etc and some of the most spectacular views in the country. You can be 50 miles away and still have Mt. Rainier staring you right in the face and you haven't experienced a real summer until you've enjoyed 4 solid months of sun at 75 degree temperatures and near zero humidity. The summer makes the other 8 months of rain bearable. That along with 3 beautiful lakes and the city being surrounded by mountains, the area has a lot to offer. We had boy & girl twins in June, 2002 and they were born on our anniversary! Their names are Sydney and Joshua and they will be 2 in June, 2004. We also had our third arrive on April 27, 2004 and her name is Katelyn. We're probably done at three, but they are the best thing that ever happened to us. Life changes in a big way once you have kids (especially twins!) but I wouldn't trade it for the world. They're a blast! I hope everyone is doing well and if you're ever in the Seattle area, drop me a line! Take Care, -Jeff
