Jeff's Story
Life
After graduating from NKU with a major in International Studies, I took a job with a large Japanese manufacturing firm (Bridgestone) to work at their head office in Tokyo. (I had already been studying Japanese for several years.) I worked there for 3 years and then switched to trading financial derivatives at the Tokyo branch of a French securities firm called Société Générale. I met my wife Ikuko (ee-kew-koh) in Tokyo in '96 and we were married a year later. I returned to the US in '98 to attend law school at Berkeley. I recently moved back to Tokyo where I'm a senior associate in the Corporate Finance department of the Tokyo office of San Francisco based international law firm of Morrison & Foerster. College
After high school I entered NKU as a biology major, but after two years of classes I was going stir-crazy from living at home and still being in Northern Kentucky, so I joined the Navy. However, due to a mix-up by my recruiter (I was ineligible for the security clearance required for the job I was promised), I was able to leave the Navy after just 5 weeks of basic training. I returned home and began taking classes again at NKU in fall of 1988. During my senior year at NKU, I was awarded a Japanese government scholarship to study Japanese for one year at Nagoya University in Japan (I had already been studying Japanese for a few years as a hobby). After completing that one year course, I returned to NKU to finish up my last semester and graduated in December 1990 with a degree in political science/international studies.
