Jeffrey's Story

Workplace I began working for the state of Nevada in 1993 and have been here eversince. I worked for the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation from 1993-2004 most of that time as the supervisor of the New Hire Reporting Unit. In 2004, I transferred to the Department of Cultural Affairs, Nevada Arts Council. The Arts Council was fun and all of that, but I realized my position wasn't going to help me advance financially or attain career goals so I decided to move to Western Nevada Community College in 2006 where I am an Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Instruction and Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs. I am still here. I am looking forward to retiring from State service at some point in the next decade and a half. Until then, I am attempting to move into more of an accounting type position. Military In January, 1987, being married for almost 18 months and realizing it was difficult to make ends meet; I went into the military and began basic & advanced training for the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky. My chosen Military Occupational Specialty was Cavalry Scout which in the real world translates to Reconnaissance Scout. There were long hours trekking through hostile terrain gathering intelligence on enemy strengths, assets and movement. It was very difficult, both physically and mentally, but quite rewarding at the same time. Once advanced training was well under way, my unit, along with several other units nearing completion of training was put on alert and told to stand-by to go to Libya. This was pretty stressful as we waited; our gear packed, for the order to get on the plane; thoughts of worry, excitement, fear and anticipation swirling about our helmeted noggins. The origins and meanings of the military expression, "Hurry up and wait" became abundantly clear as we waited, not knowing if we would actually be going to war. Fortunately, we never got the order and sto...Expand for more
od down after a few tense days. In June 1987, a mere six months after joining the army, and just barely out of training, I had a lung collapse as a complication of a severe case of pneumonia and was released from military service on a medical discharge. In hind sight it was almost amusing because the military is infamous for moving on the slow side to react to personal or personnel matters, yet once it was discovered that had I stayed in service for another couple of weeks, I would be entitled to medical disability payments, the gears of the awesome United States military machine went into overdrive, and I was on an airplane home in three days, my head spinning as the dust began to settle. In all honesty, I was glad to be home but I was also a bit disappointed because I had already completed my basic and advanced military training (the hardest part of being in the military) and was preparing to be transferred to my permanent duty station when I was suddenly back home in Carson City, a civilian again. Several members of the unit I had served with ended up being part of the operations in Panama to capture General Noriega. One of the friends I had made during training, a gentleman I was going to be stationed with at Ft. Bliss, Texas was killed during those operations. For a little while, I carried a bit of guilt that, had I been in Panama with my friends, perhaps I could have done something to save their lives. Of course the reality probably is that I would have been injured or lost my life as well and would have left behind a widow. Despite any personal political views, I have an immense amount of respect and adoration for our men and women in military service. I strongly support those brave souls who put their lives on the line every day, either domestically as part of our National Guard or over seas as Cavalry Scouts or in other military occupations defending our allies and our nation. -Jeff
