Jeffrey's Story

Life (**new April 2008 update at the end**) After having graduated from college in 1997, I worked for a temporary agency which allowed me to work at Procter & Gamble, Hewlett-Packard, the St. Joseph County Bureau of Housing, and Press Ganey Inc. in South Bend, Indiana. Press Ganey hired me full time in Dec. 1998. My parents moved to Florida in July 2000, and I moved with them, being a great help to them in their later years. I finally got a job at Walt Disney World in Sept. 2000. After all, it was the place I had been telling everyone that I wanted to work at. So, four years later, I still haven't made it back to Indiana, and I miss it. But Florida is where I live now and I love my job at WDW. If I could move Disney World to Indiana, I would, but I'm sure you all wouldn't appreciate Disney World being in Indiana. It's different living in "Touristland." (Oh, and I'm sick of hurricanes, officially.) 2007 Update My mother passed away in 2004 from Parkinson's disease, and that fall we got hit with 3 hurricanes in Polk County, Florida. Looking for some way to escape "HurricaneLand," I evaluated my position as it relates to the rest of my life and decided to pursue teaching. I got the idea from my niece, who teaches in Elkhart, Indiana. So I went back to my Alma Mater, Bryan College, in Dayton, Tennessee, in the fall of 2005. I took college classes half-time, and worked at Wal-Mart full time in Dayton from July '05 to May '07, and am presently awaiting the experience of student teaching at Rhea County High School in Evensville, Tennessee in the fall of 2007. ...Expand for more
I anticipate getting teacher certification in December of 2007. From there, I don't know where I'll end up, although I hope to make it back to the Midwest, either to Indiana or Illinois. But I don't know yet. It all depends on what happens this fall. April 2008 Update I finished all my courses and student teaching at Bryan College for teacher certification in early January. I moved back to Auburndale, FL in February to help out my dad, who is now 82 years old. I am presently still waiting to receive my teacher's license from Tennessee. After I get it, I can get Florida licensure and be eligible to teach here in Florida. However, because of the economy the way it is, Florida is slashing the education budget deeply, and Polk County is expecting to hire about 75% less teachers for the upcoming school than it normally does (only 300 instead of 1200 new teachers). I believe Polk County is the 5th largest public school district in the U.S. There are many openings for special education and elementary education, but my degree and training are in Secondary Ed. Social Studies. They say I could teach elementary if I pass the content area test, but I don't know if I feel comfortable doing so, since I have taken no el. ed. courses and have no elementary classroom experience. Still, everyone tells me I'd make a better elementary teacher than a high school teacher. Workplace My Job For right now, while I'm awaiting all the paperwork to fall in place to make me eligible to be a teacher in Florida, I'm working at Cobb Theaters' Lakeside 18 in Lakeland, FL, as an usher.
