Jenise's Story
Life
My Kids
There is joy in being a parent. Imagine that everything we ever tried and failed or succeeded in getting past our parents with - they can't do the same. My son is 20 and joined the USAF after two years of studying Public Health at UDC. I am very proud of his accomplishments! I think he may be the next Jim Carrey or Eddie Murphy. My daughter is 13 and is my twin. She constantly reminds me of youthful days (and antics) in Columbia, MD.
My Job
I am a Administrative Director at a nonprofit in Washington, DC. I manage a $4 million budget and $21 million endowment from the District government. I serve as a professional role model and team member to my associates and peers. I enjoy accounting and human resources as well as mentoring to administrative staff. I wouldn't go back to one of the Big 8's (Price Waterhouse - what it was called when I was there) if you paid me triple to do so. I love the nonprofit arena. I also love advocating for individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities who have so often lived with having their voices unheard. I know that my efforts helps them to have a greater quality of life.
My Love
My husband of 5 years and I enjoy taking cruises to the caribbean (with and without the kids) and have recently discovered that we really like Las Vegas, NV (minus the gambling). We enjoy quiet walks around Bowie pond and also enjoy a good cup of anything from Starbucks. Our combined family includes...Expand for more
5 children (my two and his three girls - ages 13, 17, & 20). They keep us very busy. As we get older we are watching our investments more closely and are looking forward to leaving the fast paced work life behind and enjoying more volunteering efforts and time spent together in our pre-golden years. We hope to retire by age 55. All the children will be out of college and on with their lives by then. (smiles)
August 2008
Our 17 year old daughter Sha'Nee was shot and killed in DC. We are no longer the family or people that we were before August 18, 2008. Someone so precious and dear to us has been taken from our lives. Sha'Nee's mother had died of cancer in Nopvember 2007 and she had moved in with us permanently. Although her mother tried to hold on to life to see her only child graduate high school, Sha'Nee struggled through her studies, and graduated on August 1, 2008. Just 17 days later she was gone. We read about gun violence in the newspaper. We see the stories on the nightly news. No one ever expects it to arrive at their door step. Now we are members of a new world -Parents of murdered children. We will continue our efforts to encourage disadvanged children in DC's Ward 8 to pursue their educational dreams by establishing the Sha'Nee Dougherty Memorial Fund. I encourage all readers to volunteer their services to help a child in need though your local Boys & Girls Club or similar entity dedicated to enriching the lives of children.
