Jennifer's Story
Life
I attended the University of Kentucky and graduated in 1985 with a BA in political science. Deciding not to continue on to law school I immediately returned to school to get an AAS in Architecture and finished 3 years of Interior Design.
I married and moved to the Boston area for 2 years before returning to Lexington to complete my BA in Interior Design. I worked in the field of Architecture and Interior Design for 8 years but grew tired of the business. I divorced and returned to school to get a Masters in Library Science. I did work/study in the library during college so I had experience! I had also worked on and off at Transylvania University Library between Architecture jobs. I concentrated on Children's Literature and took a position as Youth Services Librarian in Northern Kentucky upon graduation. Then 8 months later I accepted a job as Children's Librarian at Dayton Metro Library in Ohio where I remained until 2002. Then I took the position of Coordinator of Children's Services at Wright Memorial Public Library in the Dayton suburb of Oakwood and have been here since. I love my job and our library has been ranked the #1 library of its size in the nation for the last 4 years running. I present workshops for the library community around Ohio on topics concerning chi...Expand for more
ldren's programming, but have also presented at a national library convention in Orlando.
I lived alone with my various cats in a beautiful Victorian house in an historic neighborhood here in Dayton until 2005. I remarried to a man named Rod Sommer and we bought a mid-century modern house in Kettering. He brought a Jack Russell named Elvis into the marriage. I have 2 cats, Dalila and Kula. (Update: Elvis died in 2008. We got a new puppy this past March. He's part poodle, part Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Growing up we would have called that a mutt, but today he is the Designer Dog known as Cavapoo. His name is Ping and he's absolutely adorable!
I love to travel with my biggest trip being an adventure at the Ice Hotel in Sweden. (I highly recommend it, by the way, and I did it alone.) Now Rod and I travel together (alot) and he also comes with me to the many library conferences I attend.
I was in band while attending UK and am still involved with the alumni band. We play 2-3 basketball games each year. If you watch a UK game on tv you may see me sometime! I'll be the one playing piccolo. We also play at one football game every other year. It's a good way to keep up with my college buddies.
That's a brief summary of my busy and varied life since high school. It's a good life!
