Jennifer's Story

Life I currently live in Castaic, CA (northern Los Angeles county), with my husband, Tom. We were married on Feb. 19, 2005. We had our first child, a little girl, on Feb 11, 2007, who sadly passed away that same day due to her pre-mature birth. Our second child, a boy, was born on August 31, 2008, weighing a hefty 9 lbs, 3 oz!!! Workplace My current employment is as a substitute teacher and reading intervention teacher for the Saugus Union School District in Santa Clarita, CA (outside of Los Angeles) although I will be taking some time off with the birth of my son. Prior employment was in the New Orleans, Louisiana area, where I taught 1st and 4th grades for Jefferson Parish Public Schools in 1999, and 2nd grade at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Elementary School in 2000-2001. School I went to school through the 10th grade in Yorktown Heights, NY, attending Brookside (k-4), Crompond (5), Milded E. Strang Middle School (6-8), and Yorktown High School (9-10). My dad got transferred to San Francisco at the beginning of my junior year of high school. I completed my last 2 years of high school at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, CA. Anyone who knew me when I was in grades k-12 would have seen me as very shy and quiet (still am, but getting better!) My favorite subject was always math and I really en...Expand for more
joyed reading. College I attended the University of California, Davis from Sept. 1992 through June 1996. My first year at UCD I was in the Integrated Studies program, which was a freshman residential based honors program. I lived in one of 2 dorms dedicated to the I.S. program, and took a class as part of the program each quarter of my freshman year. I began as a Computer Science and Engineering major, stemming from the fact that math was my favorite subject and I enjoyed using my computer. Calculus was a big eye opener for me, even though I had taken it in high school and my first computer science class was even more of an eye opener. My second quarter of college turned out to be a lot better, but I still had no idea of what I wanted to major in... just no comp. sci! It wasn't until the fall of my second year that I took my first psychology class, and decided to pursue that major, focusing on developmental psych, minoring in human development. At first I thought I would go to grad school and do research in that area, but later decided that I would rather teach. I graduated UCD in 1996 then the following year I moved to New Orleans, LA for 4 years, where I attended the University of New Orleans and received my first teaching certificate, as well as taking some classes towards my Masters in Education.
