Jenny's Story
I'm a retired TN Licensed Optician; married in '75 to Terry Pfeiler, (Norris HS, TN, Class of 65, UTK, 70.) Hubby was a TVA electrical engineer who worked on the designs of the Sequoia and Bellafont nuclear power plants. He struggled with many health issues from 2006 and had 5 brain surgeries as well as heart surgery, developing Parkinson's before passing away in 2015. High School for me was Wagner, (Clark AFB, Philippines), and NBCR (McGuire AFB, NJ), finishing in NC at Hunter Huss (Gastonia, NC). I attended Gaston College, NC off and on from 70 to 72, graduated Roane State, TN '73, and attended Chattanooga State, in TN, '94, while later apprenticing for 3 years to learn and license in opticianry.
Nowadays, I'm the presbyopic, chocoholic, mother of 2 humans and part owner of a chubby gal pomeranian rescue. My son works for the government after he received a PhD in biomedical engineering from NC State and NC Chapel Hill. He also spent time as a research assistant at Duke University. Our daughter was born with Spina Bifida and is paraplegic. She's a beautiful soul who graces the lives of all around her.. She is the most patient being I know! She's also a terrific computer researcher! Parenting her has brought me many opportunities for public speaking and writing, and she has taught me that success is not measured by the $ in your bank account!...Expand for more
I have TWO new grandbabies! My son married a wonderful NC girl a few years ago (who has her own PhD,) They live near DC.
In 2012 I retired from Lens Crafters, where I worked for almost 18 years as an optician. These days, when I am not too tired from yard work, I enjoy taking photos and playing Candy Crush online. I spend inclement days working in various crafts and relaxing with sudoku puzzles and reading. ANYTHING. I also enjoy playing Mah Jongg regularly with a few girl friends!
I moved the family in 2012 to a very accessible home, with a yard defined by a large, wild-looking creek that attracts large birds and has raccoon and beaver. While much remodeling was going on inside the house by professionals, I played at landscaping, adding several small trees and shrubs. I also re-dug, mulched, and lined the front beds and a side bed with edge and paver stones, hid the heat pumps behind prefab fencing and had a large storage shed built to match the house exterior. My son and his wife helped me build and plant a raised vegetable bed during one of their visits. (I do my own push-mowing too!) I still have lots of plans for the yard but since my husband passed away, I have had time for trips and I hope to go exploring the world before my time is up. I've traveled to several school reunions and I enjoy finding my old friends and making new ones!
