Jerome's Story

After high school in November of 1957 went to Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS for Ground Radio Operators school, returned back to St Paul in April 1958. I was a member of the 237th Air Traffic Control Flight of the Minnesota Air National Guard from 1956 to 1964. I had a few short time jobs as a short order cook at a few restaurants in St Paul. Then went to work for Whirlpool on Arcade St in St Paul working as a spot welder in the freezer assembly line for a few years. Decided that I didn't want to work at Whirlpool the rest of my working career. I attended night classes at Brown Institute of Electronics and was able to pass the FCC Second Class Radiotelephone license examination. Was laid off from Whirlpool three quarters of the way through the Radio Engineering class. Not able to complete the class as I was on unemployment benefits most of the summer and could not afford tuition. Then went to work for Gould National Batteries in the Ni-Cad plant on Vandalia St in St Paul. Worked there for about eight months. Was laid off from Gould as the contract for Ni-Cad batteries for the Remington rechargeable shaver expired and no other orders to fill. Laid off for a few months back on unemployment benefits. Found employment at KSTP-TV as a radio dispatcher in the news department. Monitoring police and fire departments and sending news & photo crews to report on fires and severe accidents. After working at KSTP-TV for a few years I went to work for the State Of Minnesota as a radio dispatcher for the Highway Patrol in St Paul. In 1968 was promoted to radio dispatching supervisor and opened the new radio dispatch office in Mankato, MN. In 1975 I transferred to radio technician at Mankato highway department. I left the...Expand for more
State of Minnesota in 1980 and went to work for Epic Systems in Westchester, IL. Epic Systems manufactured paramedic radios like the EMT's used on the Television program 'Emergency'. Epic systems went bankrupt in early 1985 and then found employment at Magnus Electronics in Lincolnwood, IL. Magnus Electronics was also a small manufacturer of radio equipment, mostly exporting base radio units to Africa and South America. I went on my farthest service call for Magnus Electronics. I went to Morocco and set up a radio system in Casablanca for the Gendarme Royale. Spent two weeks and will never forget that experience. Magnus sold their product line to a company out in New Hampshire. I didn't want to move to New Hampshire so came back to St Paul and worked for a number of engineering contract agencies as a electronics technician. In 1999 had a non malignant tumor the size of a tennis ball on my right forearm. The tumor caused my right hand to become paralyzed and was not able to use hand tools and the contract agency suspended my contract. After surgery to remove the tumor and therapy I went to work for Marsden Building Maintenance on a special account at ReliaStar (now ING) in Minneapolis in the control room monitoring fire, air conditioning, heating and some security systems using five computers to monitor systems in the three buildings around Marquette & Washington in Minneapolis. I retired from Marsden in 2003 and took my Social Security benefits. I live in South St Paul in a senior high-rise. I do some volunteering at Thompson Park Activity Center in West St Paul in the computer center. Twice a week I help other volunteers assist older adults with computer learning and computer troubleshooting. Yep I am a GEEK!
