st before COVID-19 hit! With COVID still with us, I traveled to Pucon and Temuco Chile (Nov/Dec 2022) - nice with 2+3 vaccinations to still be COVID-free.
• Life lessons: Many of those things I learned in kindergarten have served me well: Sharing, clean up your own messes, care about others and treat them like you want to be treated, listen well, and use your imagination.
• Gratitude for: Science and higher education have allowed me to impact in a positive way the lives of many wonderful people. It seems that each day I am thinking, listening, articulating ideas, designing new experiments, and explaining biology, all while trying to thoughtfully mentor young scientists and colleagues. Each of these activities enriches me and pushes me intellectually and/or emotionally but also helps others around me to develop their innate capacities.
• Proudest moments: 1) Birth of my son and each of his major life accomplishments; 2) The graduation of each Ph.D. who I have help educate; 3) being awarded ‘Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science’ in Biology the same day and on the same stage as my brother Michael received ‘AAAS Fellow’ in Statistics (2015).
