Jesse's Story
Life
I'm a Web / Database Developer at jobing.com. I like Computers, Soccer, and Star Wars type sci-fi. I live in Mesa Arizona, near Fiesta Mall & Mesa Community College. I moved to Arizona almost immediately after graduating from SUNY Tech. My favorite pro soccer clubs are LA Galaxy and NY/NJ Metrostars for MLS, NewCastle United for English Premeire League (And temporarily Manchester United as long as Timmy Howard is there), and Cienciano for Peru. My favorite TV series are Star Trek Voyager, Andromeda, & Babylon 5. My favorite foods are all chocolate dairy (ice cream, milkshake, milk), pizza, burgers, and chilli. I wear soccer outfits all the time, mostly MLS jerseys. I am an advanced open water certified scuba diver. I'm also planning on possibly going to pilot, skydiving and/or racing school. My favorite computer games are NeverWinter Nights, Star Wars Galaxies, StarCraft (Broodwar), SimCity 4000, Master of Orion 2 (3 somewhat), and Civilization 3 (Conquests, Rise and Rule mod). I am a major Emule (P2P) addict on both the downloader and the sharing end.
School
I think North Stafford High School was the best school but I liked Middletown too. Safford Sux. The only change I would really make possibly developing an interest earlier in soccer and the internet would be like it is today. My favorite teacher all together was my Biology and Human Physiolgy teacher at North Stafford - Mrs Trant. My favorite Teacher for Middletown was Math 12AT teacher, Mr. Smith. My favorite classes were Biology (NSHS), Business Computer Applications (NSHS, middletwon equiv sucked), and Electronic English (really should be called TV Production, MHS). My least favorite classes was 10th Grade English (MHS) and French I (MHS).
College
I liked SUNY tech alot and wouldn't mind going to college full time again, even at ASU. I mostly played video games and surfed the internet (Introverted computer geek's form of partying) and did work only in the difficult classes (English Lit, Foreign Language, and Communication subject areas) and programming classes. SUNY Tech is a really good school particulary in it's core computer science courses.
Workplace
I am the sole full time programmer at jobing.com...Expand for more
. It is sort of lonely. I do just about all the database back end, most of the business logic, and some of the presentation. I want to specialize on the database and hard core crunchy componenents and overall performance tuning. 85% of Jobing.com's inner workings is made by me with about 50% exclusively made by me
My proudest components are the search engine (mostly performance), site traffic tracking & data mining, mapping (thumbnails only, not the map-it buttons -- didn't finish component & especially asp.net on time so it got outsourced to a 3rd party firm), Distancing (feature never been allowed up but it has been finished for a year and a half, but the code/concept is very portable), Hierarchy system (Universal, at least 3 layers to reach surface functionality), spell Checker (100% database powered, ADO Bug & deadline made company force me to use soundex instead of metaphone), a whole massive FeedMeSQL system (only used for internal adhoc reporting w/o tedious UI-making but it is highly portable), the universal Site Email system (Idea is mostly gregg's but mutations and implementation are mine), and the Email Send System (no longer in use because of lack of 1mil/mo email scalability and want-it-now reporting needs, but it is mostly portable), and the Universal survey system which is really 5 significant features on the site - Virtual Interview, Universal Forms, Extended Member registration Questions, Event Registration, and satisfaction surveys, and the Data Assimilator, which is a universal txt/xls importer to SQL Server table application (calls less portable code to acutally assimilate the data).
Jobing.com is on a 2-CPU server on a 8-drive RAID 5 and 4 gigs on rams and supports over 5 million page views per month on this lonely server (excluding smtp mail). The database is 120+GB, 80% tracking and reporting (your every move on the site is tracked pretty much, especially searches).
I like my work a lot. I'm ok with the company. I'm a bit worn down and find that I'm largely unable to adapt to the company's growth particularly in the politics and communications department but I am treated very well (in the past year) and so I'm content and don't really care to move on.
