Jim's Story

Hi my name is Jim Ballard. I was born in Dunnville and grew up in Dunnville, attending Dunnville Public School (1944-1951) and Dunnville District High School (1951-1956), and president of the student council 1954-'55. Upon graduating from High School in 1956 I entered McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, graduating in 1960 with my BA, sciences and Pre-Med. I then attended Western University, London, Ontario where I completed four years of Medicine followed by a rotating internship at Victoria Hospital, London Ontario. I have always wanted to be a doctor since my early years. I was inspired by people like Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Africa; some of the great surgeons like Dr. Michael DeBakey , the renowned Cardiac surgeon from Texas, Jonas Salk, Drs. Banting and Best ~ discoverers of insulin at the Univ. of Toronto, and my own family doctor in Dunnville. I owe my present life as a doctor to the early teaching I received in my home town, Dunnville. The teachers were superb and their efforts will always be remembered. I couldn't be happier than I am now. Family: I am married to Peg and we have had 5 children : Jennifer (born in 1964), Julie (¿65), Robin (¿66), Jeffrey (Jeff) (¿67) and Jill (¿74). Jennifer was born while I was still in Medical School and Peggy was nursing at Victoria Hospital, London. Jennifer¿s siblings were all born in St. Catharines, Ontario, where I practiced Medicine up until 1985. Looking back now, those were to be some of the happiest, fun-loving years we have ever spent all together. We were very close to one another in spite of a heavy workload in Medicine. I think we made every moment count and every holiday mean something special. We went on ski holidays to Aspen, Vail and Vermont; and to nearby places such as Kissing Bridge in N.Y. state, Collingwood etc. We even drove the whole family to New Orleans for 3 weeks ~ it was so hot 110°F., that the children decided to stay in the Hotel and swim. We went somewhere every year ~ Disneyworld, the Caribbean (Jamaica, Barbados, Europe, etc. together). My wife, Peg and I were fortunate enough to ski most winters in the Alps ~ Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy or in the Colorado Rockies ~ Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge etc. Our lives were full and we made the most of our time with each other. We moved to Vancouver BC in 1985, where we would be closer to the mountains, for skiing and my work offered more time off, to be with the family. We missed Ontario for a long time and still do. e a daughter; Julie living in Toronto and this offers an excuse to return to our roots, usually yearly. I continue to practice Medicine here in Victoria and have an office downtown overlooking the Ocean, Olympic mountains , the Empress Hotel and Harbour. Jennifer, our eldest, is now my secretary and has been for approximately 17 years. I don't know what I would do without her. The patients love her too. Jill, our youngest lives in Victoria. She has her Master¿s degree in Fine Arts from Toronto and works with an Architect. Robin, our third child has her Masters in Education and is married to Patrick Hennessy, with 2 children, Leah 10 and Sam 7yrs; they live in North Vancouver , below Grouse Mountain, where they often ski. We see them at least once or twice a month. Julie is married and has one son, Max. They live in Toronto and Julie is the Vice President of a busy Interior Design Studio. We moved to Victoria in 1991, and have lived here ever since. We found Victoria and the surrounding Ocean so spectacular, refreshing and almost stress free! We have spent considerable time at Whistler, skiing, hiking and Vancouver is nearby. The beauty is all around us and living now in Victoria, the air is mild and there is little or no snowfall. It is now mid April, as I write this, and there are buds and flowers and blossoms everywhere ~ just beautiful! The Winter Olympics were here and gone, leaving wonderful memories forever. My pastimes are involved with friends and family, skiing, hiking, sailing, flying, photography, art, music (especially Jazz), and just reading a good book. We have an Old English Sheep dog ~ Harry, whom we love like one of the family. Peggy and I count our blessings for our health, family and friends. We both keep very busy, which, I feel, is so important as time flies by so quickly. Remembering good times is so important and when the family gets together we have a lot to talk and laugh about. I feel so very fortunate. Growing older beats the alternative ~ dying young. I learned early on ~ "Going after what you love in life, never take no for an answer." " No one is in charge of their happiness but you." "Always choose life." This year will offer even more joy, in renewing old friendships with those we have known the longest and who meant so much during our formative school years ~ our high school class ~ DHS 1956.I am looking forward to this reunion so much. Hope to get lots of pictures and share them with you. I will add more as time goes on. Bye for now. Jim Ballard
