Jim's Story

Life I graduated from Brown Univ. (AB/Psychology) in 1959, married Jeanne Jacobs (SSHS '56) that Summer and started Columbia Univ. School Of Dentistry that Fall. I graduated from Columbia (DDS) in June, '63 and opened my own dental practice that Fall in Oyster Bay, NY, where I practiced General Dentistry for almost 25 years and loved every minute of it! We lived in OB, had 3 children - Steven ('63), Susan ('64) and Wendy ('67) - and became very involved in the usual community organizations, activities and "stuff"! Jeanne and I subsequently divorced. In 1973, while vacationing in St. Thomas, V.I., I met Cheryl Clark - it's a very romantic story but much too long to tell here! Cheryl had 2 children, Kevin ('68) and Garrett ('72). We married in 1977 and continued to live in Oyster Bay. While managing a 13-member law firm in Mineola, Cheryl went on to fulfill her childhood desire to become an attorney, graduating from St. John's Univ. Law School (JD) in '82, passing the NY Bar and working in the Banking and Mortgage fields on LI. We discovered Hilton Head Island, SC in '78, fell in love with it immediately and decided we'd retire there in 2002. We bought a condo on the Island in '81, Cheryl took and passed the SC Bar in '83 and, in '85, we bought a lot on one of the golf courses in Port Royal Plantation. 24 hours after signing the contract, we decided we just couldn't wait til '02 to move to HH. So in August, '86, I retired from my dental practice, Cheryl resigned her position, we sold everything, packed up and moved to Hilton Head, where we immediately started building a new home 16 years ahead of schedule! That Fall, I established Isle Care, Inc., (SC would not honor my NYS Dental License!!) providing inspections and services for absentee homeowners on Hilton Head; after operating the business for 27 years, I sold the business in 2013 and retired again - this time for good! Cheryl initially practiced law in a small firm on the Island but, in '91, she started her own practice, dealing mainly with real estate, business and estate matters. She had a very s...Expand for more
uccessful practice which she thoroughly enjoyed but decided to retire in December, 2015. Steven & Cheryl (he married one, too!) are in E. Greenwich, RI; their sons, Jeff and Zack, are now both living and working in Boston. Susan's in Philadelphia and is an Assistant Professor at the U of Delaware Business School. Wendy's in San Francisco with Tatiana (we finally got a grand-daughter!); she works for Genentech. Kevin's in Bend, OR, in the Food and Beverage industry. Garrett passed away in 1981 at age 10.. Four years ago we relocated on the Island to Indigo Run; we've now been on the Island for 31 years and we still can't think of any other place we'd rather live. We enjoy the beaches, bike trails, natural beauty, wonderful people and "relaxed" life-style; I've even started to "play" a little golf; - I really enjoy it because I never take a pencil with me!! In the mid-'90s, we learned to ski (snow!) and love taking ski trips with our friends in the HHI Ski Club - we're off to Snowmass-Aspen in Feb, 2018!. We've enjoyed traveling to many domestic and foreign places - exotic destinations such as Antarctica, the North Pole, the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu, Iceland and Greenland as well as the more "normal" places in Europe, Africa, South America, etc.! And we have many more destinations still in mind! I volunteer at least twice a week at Volunteers In Medicine, a free clinic providing medical and dental services, preventive clinics, etc., here on the Island. I also enjoy photography, theater, reading, boats and cars (never outgrew those loves!) and finally sold my restored '65 Plymouth Barracuda a few years ago. We've also become wine enthusiasts and have enjoyed making wine with friends- as well as drinking it!! Overall, it's been a GREAT life so far. While I've had some significant health problems over the years, thanks to modern medicine, they've been resolved - I'm getting to be bionic! And I have no plans to stop travelling or otherwise cut back on enjoying all that life has to offer. We're looking forward to seeing y'all at our next Reunion!
