Jim's Story

Life Following HS, enlisted Marine Corps (for God and country, and the adventure) volunteered for Vietnam (13 months in country during 1966-67; Chu Lai area just south of Da Nang in I Corps). Adventuresome, but hard to feel productive. (Our own son, SSG Patrick Cleary, recently returned from a year in Iraq with the MNARNG, and feels similarly about the experience.) Then off to college, certain I'd fail but determined to try. Graduated summa cum laude 3 1/2 years later with double major in soc and psych. Continued on in doctoral program in soc and statistics, also woking as psych assistant, teaching assistant and research assistant at U MN, and in soc-sci research for federal govt and a private research firm. In '76, left grad school just short of doctoral degree for employment with Mn Legislative Audit Commission. In '78, transferred to Mn House of Representatives and have been there ever since, working as a legislative analyst in various substantive areas (taxes, education, criminal law and most recently in military/veterans affairs). No thoughts about retirement, but am exploring opportunities for "consulting or security work" in Iraq. After the Marine Corps, discovered the joys of female companionship, dated lots and married Trish Bellig, the proverbial farmer's daughter, in 1970. With our 37th anniversary approaching, we still take it a day at a time, feeling our way along. Trish taught special ed and most recently 1st grade, getting the tykes off to a really fine start in life. Her classes have grown ever more diverse over the years, until currently all her students are minorities, with about half being foreign born, and a quarter being enlish language learners. Aren't we all. . . Recently, with our son in Iraq, Trish started and complete her MA/ED degree, along with our middle daughter, Krista. It was an adventure and a real joy to share our three kids youth, but all too brief. Our oldest daughter, Rachel, left HS two years early for ...Expand for more
St. Thomas U, then U-MN law school, where she became one of their younges law graduates ever. She now works in legal publishing, is married to Kobie, an assistant attorney general. Krista went off to St Ben's and became a teacher. She and her husband live down the block from us, but are now moving to Manhattan where her husband has been selling printing for his family company located back here in the Twin Cities. Patrick, our youngest, finished at St. John's U and started work as an public auditor, before being mobilized for the war. By a whisker, he made it home alive, back to his wife, home and job. Trust that we rattled the rosary beads a lot during his deployment, and since too. But for real spiritual renewal, it's off to the western prairies and mountains, at least a few times per year, for backpacking or hunting, with our kids whenever possible. Our preferred method is to hike, hunt and explore, always on the move, and to sleep under the stars, right out on the ground with only a .44 revolver for a bedmate. In inclement weather, the pickup topper is a suitable compromise. Lodging is to admit failure. With all the proverbial cows now in the barn, this summer's solo trek promises to be the epic journey. Hope to still have a little steam left when our grandkids stretch up a bit. Being a gregarious loner, I've lost contact with all our great colleagues and faculty back at Trinity Prep in Sioux City. But with each passing year, I grow more aware of the truly special life we shared there. I like to say that in the seminary I learned to pray, and in the Marine Corps I learned to swear and fight, and with that skillset we can relate to most anyone we meet. But the fact is, in the seminary we learned the joys of studying, and the pleasures of intellectual life. We also learned that privation could be liberating, and that friendship, however fleeting, is eternal. Trinity was a very special place, because of the values we embraced and still share.
