Jim's Story

I left Columbus in Aug of 69 to attend Gulf Coast, in Panama City, FL. Really it was too soon after loosing my best friend in an auto accident, and coming close to death myself. My father thought it was the best think, so I went. I didn't stay a full tri-mester, before I came back to Columbus to work at Kirvens on their shipping/receiving dock. I stayed almost a year, then went to Atlanta to attend Career Academy, and later Elkins Institute. This and knowing Mike Brandenburg, armed me with enough credentials to work at WHYD, and later WXLE, in Phenix City. I only worked part time on and off for about two years. During that two years I ended up working two full time shifts at both stations at the same time. It was challenging, interesting, and not really more than I could do. That went on for six months. That six month period was the only time that I had quit playing out in bands around the Columbus area since I was seventeen. I got the opportunity to go to Atlanta in late 74, which I really thought I needed in more ways than just my musical growth, so I did. It was very hard and different than anything I had done thus far, but I didn't have anything else and I felt I must stick to it in order to advance. I ended up getting married in 75. That marriage lasted five years. I was called back to Columbus to play in a house band in 76 at Dee Fords. That group did very well, and stayed there for eight months after I got with them. We took a two week vacation then went to Atlanta to play Dee Fords there and broke up. All that happened just about that fast... From there I played in several bands both local to Atlanta and road bands. I enjoyed the music and the life style, and surprisingly made e...Expand for more
nough to keep a roof over my head, and heads on my drums. God was very good to me in not giving me any offspring to keep up with until I was thirty five. As my wife was pregnant with our second child and the group I was playing with broke up; I was led to believe it was time to see how the 9 to 5ers made it happen. Again God was watching out for me and I finally landed a job with a seafood company that ended up growing in leaps and bounds to become one of the biggest in the southeast. After fourteen years with them, I was streamlined out of my position of Director of Transportation. This was early to mid 2001. 911 happened, the bottom fell out of the economy and jobs were scarce for quite a while. I worked side jobs, delivery, courier, cut grass, and finally went to work with a moving company in a dispatch/Ops mngr position. One GM was eventually replaced by another who decided I needed to be in sales. (bless his heart). And that brings us to today. I have a twenty five year old son, a twenty three year old son, a wife ten years my junior, two dogs, four cats, a mortgage, and plenty to be grateful for... I still play/sing and occasionally record, which I'm also grateful for. I've tried not to make too many enemies, and if some how I've wronged you in the past...I'm sorry. The things that mean the most to me right now, are writing stories that someone will read; communicating with my sons and whoever will allow me to communicate with them and singing. I think I love to sing now more than I ever have in my life. So, that's my story, probably as brief as I can tell it. I do write about different episodes of my life, perhaps you can read some of those, if you think it may be of interest to you. jg
