Jim's Story
After graduation, left the Bay to go to Chico State. My mom and dad had moved to Paradise in the foothills of the Sacramento Valley in December of '61. I lived w/ Brian Nemy and family after they moved for the balance of my senior year.
Have only been back to the old neighborhood to visit and do the class reunion routine.
Chico State, party school, and yes I had the grade point average to prove that I was an All-American party kid.
The college counselor said that I ought to be an engineering major...then I took college higher math! Then he said try business...then I took accounting! I did enjoy my time in a required class called Public Speaking and became a Communications/Speech Major.
In the meantime I formed a Rock 'n Roll Band, played for hundreds of dances, proms, parties and toured with several well known groups. Out of SF the Beau Brummels, also the Yardbirds, Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, and Paul Revere & the Raiders, etc... My band was always the lead off band to the headliner group for concerts. But, it all came to a halt when I developed arthritis and couldn't even rehearse between gigs. (The only good thing about it, was it kept me out of the Draft and SE Asia) So, if I couldn't play music as a musician I would have to settle for playing music on the radio!
In my preparations for becoming the greatest Rock DJ ever, I came to southern CA to attend William B. Ogden, Radio Operational Engineering School and pass my FCC License Exam. While in SoCal I met the love of my life my wife of over 45 years, Judy.
We were engaged in 2 months. I went back to Chico State for my next year at college, Judy came to Butte College in Oroville in the Spring semester. She went back to SoCal for Easter Break and when she came back to Chico I said, "that is the last time we are ever going to be apart!" We drove to Reno and were married the next day!
So, I determined that I was going to return to t...Expand for more
he Bay and "own the market". My first jobs in broadcasting were in Chico (KHSL TV), Oroville (KAOR),and Marysville (KMYC). Then I headed for SoCal and the LA market. Landed my first major market gig at KWIZ an oldies station, programed an FM from elevator music to rock KYMS, and worked for several other stations in and around the area. I was offered a job with the company that was programing KFRC(SF),KHJ(LA),KJR(SD) and most of the major stations in the top markets in the US. I thought that I'd be sent to the "farm club" station in the San Joaquin Valley, and at the worst maybe be hired in San Diego or San Francisco. But, they surprised me and offered me Detroit and Chicago!!!
Crazy me, I never thought that I'd have to leave California to have a successful radio career. Plus, these were markets that were suffering from great racial unrest at that time. I was scared to think of trying to raise a family in one of those cities.
I was really settled and had just bought my second horse and sadly realized that my over-inflated EGO that was too big to fit through the door was anything but mature. I decided that I wasn't going to be a "radio station gypsy" going from coast to coast and town to town to further a rock radio DJ career. So, in a matter of less than a week I matured by a decade or so and determined that I was going back to college.
I continued to broadcast news and/or DJ work to make ends meet. Got busy and back into college. Got my degree with a very surprising high grade point. Fast forward another decade and we are have our own little horse property and plans for starting a family.
Final family score: Boys 3 and Girls 1.
The first three are all grown. The last boy, was a "change your life" kid. He turned 14 this December. Can't say that God doesn't have a sense of humor! When we adopted him I said, "He'll either keep us young or kill us!" So, far he's really keeping us on our toes.
