Jim's Story

Well, where to begin? First of all, I'm a base brat and proud of it!! If I hadn't been, I probably wouldn't have experienced the places I've lived throughout this country and met as many good people as I did in my younger years. I didn't always appreciate that back then but have learned to realize that everybody I've known has left their mark on me in one way or another. You'll probably remember me being "on the air" at CKBG in Bagotville, QC or CHCL in Cold Lake, AB back in the day! In Bagotville (from 1965 - 1970), I was involved in swimming, acting in the school plays, had my own paper route and was involved with Scouts and Search and Rescue. I hung around with the likes of Dale Stewart, Hal Button, Rocky Robar, Buddy Graham, Chuck Pratt, Derek Bird, Fred Brownlee, Diane McMakin, Cindy Miners, Carol Beals, Kathy Wilkinson, Brenda Glover, Kathy Crawford, Francis Ouellet, Bernard Plante, Ron Hamill, Mark Wells, Cathy Palmer, Dave Percival, Denise Mullin, Edith Merriman, Anne McLaren, Alana Makin, Linda Walls, John Johns, Barry Hunt, Don Hester, Pat Fortin, Bev Smithers, Judy MacKay, Margaret Balanger, Morgan Jooste, Dean Proctor, Danny Green, Shirley Boudreault, Ian Turnbull, Debbie Gagnon, Wendy Taylor, Dave Dyson, Peter Dzuba, Christine Brown, Ron Tracy, Felicity Munn, Debbiie Ettinger, Denise Johnson, Linda Butcher, Chris Ricken, Judy Palmer David Dare, David McComiskey, Glen Archibald, Terry Veerhelle, Mark Van Striver, Ed Lank, Grant Walsh, Judy Pratt, Barry Gill, Ian Sutherland, Tom Ross, Coleen Makin, Clarence Johnson, Heather Lindsay, Bobbie Vincent, Sean Kennedy, John Redman, Eric Booth, Fred Eves, Danny Gill, Judy Elliott, Holly Hepburn, Tom Gallant, Bob Lee, Joanne Charbonneau, Wanda Turnbull, Caren Clifford, Karen Dyson, Susan Hunt, Denise "Bubbles" Braun and Karen Grubisch. While at Cold Lake, (from 1970 - 1973) I spent half the day working at the gas station on base and the other half trying to stay awake while I attended Beaver River High. In the evenings, I was either at the radio station, Rovers or slinging beer at one or more of our fine drinking establishments in Cold Lake or Grand Centre. Then the high school moved from the base to Grand Centre and I attended the first year of the new High School. Hal Button and Fred Brownlee followed me a year later from Bagotville to Cold Lake in 1971! In Cool Pool, I hung with Chris Murphy, Cathy Hosek, Barry Alexander, Deb McInnes, Barry Runnels, Bruce Borer, Freeman Taylor, Sonja Imlah, Bruce Macdonald, Robbie Thorburn, Brian Gourley, Debbie White, Cheryl Mark, Chris Jacques, Vicki Bolan, Kathy Severn, Robbi Merrill, Patti Wiebe, Sue Phipps, Judy Eisenhaur, Danny Smith, Paul Odell, Mark Dahl, Don Cassidy, Peter Jackson, Rick Keppler, Andy Hewitt, Brian Shackleton, Kelly Turner, Jennifer Pankratz, Debbie Adams, Roxy Burton, Gary Fisher, Ron Dick, Lance Brown, Marg Hallet, Ron Hodges, Rose LaRose, Heather Gillet, Suzanne Bamber, Bob Preston, Bruce Gallant, Dave Moir, Russ Odegard, Bev Clark, Mike Cormier, Bob Nichol, Kerry Coxen, Bryan Davis, Kathy Reynolds, Howie Gibb, Kent Grant, Carol Coleman, Rick and Stu Talbot, Pattie Lewis, Dean Street, Cal Grasley, Bev O'Brien, Tracy Hagans, Gary Harwardt, Karen Hill, Ken Hodges, Pete Holmes, Lynda Nyburg, Jane West, Cliff Hardlicka, Sue Jacobs, Jean Lohmaier, Andrew Martens, Royden Moon, Linda Melanson, Wendy Williams, Nadine Wanitowy, Debbie Heffner, Debbie Lewis, Linda Rollison, Kim Brown, Kelly Barr, Bob Burton, Mark Emery and Susan Gale. If you knew me in Cold Lake, you'll remember that Brenda Morrow and I were an item! Married Brenda in 1974. We had two daughters (Brandy in 1976 and Shannon in 1980) as well as a son (Cody in 1984). Divorced 20 years later. Brandy has two sons, Brandon, 25 and the first grandson to graduate high school so far and Ethan, 17. She and her husband adopted Seirria (2020) now 6 and had Brennley in 2017, now 4. Shannon has a son, Alex who is 15 years old. My son Cody, had pretty much gone his own way and wanted nothing to do with the rest of the family. On occasion, I'd hear about his antics from some of his friends. He no longer communicated with any of us. Unfortunately, in November 2020, Cody, suffering with mental issue problems, took his own life. He left behind his common-law wife and, at the time, a 7-year-old son. Over the years, I've had careers; fighting forest fires in Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada Packers, Sears, newscaster at various radio and TV stations throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan as well as a stint as a photo journalist. In 1980, I went to work in a coal mine in Grande Cache, Alberta as an assayer/lab technician working side-by-side with Chris Murphy. Got laid off there two year...Expand for more
s later and then took a position working at a poison gas well in Swan Hills. From there I went back to coal mining but this time in BC's newest town, Tumbler Ridge. Was there from 1982 to 1987 as the Senior Geological Assayer, then later as the Lab Foreman at the processing plant. Came down to the Lower Mainland from 1987 - 1989, to go to college and took computer programming; worked at Yokohama Tire for five years as a computer tech, programmer and their Systems Administrator. Went back to college a second time (hadn't learned my lesson the first time) and became a Certified Network Engineer. Started working for the City of Vancouver as an IT Support Specialist in 1996. Became the Senior Network Support Specialist in charge of various projects that took me through the Vancouver Heath Board, the Public Library, the Parks Board, the Fire Department and the Vancouver Police Department. Budget cuts forced a number of the senior people within the City's IT department to look for work in other sectors of the City. I ended up with the Parking Enforcement branch in 2006 as a Parking Enforcement Officer. Fourteen years under my belt and I've learned a lot about the streets and how to handle some very strange and very irate citizens. In February 2011, I came off the streets to do a 13-month stint as an Acting Parking Operations Supervisor (and managing to put on about 20 pounds that really wasn't needed while being a desk jockey!!!). After piloting a desk, I returned to the street spreading the joy wherever I go!! In 1997, I married a Systems Analyst working in the HR department at the City of Vancouver. June was a single Mom with two young ones; Andrew (7 at the time) and Katie (5 back then). Andrew completed a Game Design and Graphics course at the Arts Institute in Vancouver and after a two and a half year stint at Petsmart began working for Electronic Arts based out of Burnaby. Katie completed her two-year course at BCIT to become a Systems Analyst, just like her Mom!!! She's held a number of temporary positions with the City of Vancouver since then and now has a permanent job working in the Mayor's office. Unfortunately, June and I officially went our separate ways in August 2014 after 18 years of being together. Some very interesting and somewhat strange events (nothing illegal or anything like that) took place that prevented me from joining both the Armed Forces and the RCMP after graduating from high school. Those are stories for a later time, possibly around a large number of beers with you guys! I'll stick to my dark rum and coke though! However, I did do a lot of work with military and civilian Search and Rescue groups as well as forest fire fighting in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Took a lot of first aid courses as well as structure and underground fire fighting courses as well as underground Search and Rescue throughout the years, especially when I worked in the mines. Always managed to keep myself in somewhat decent shape throughout the years and was actually training to become a Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) member back in 1999. However, a routine physical turned up a heart murmur. Ended up having my chest cracked (May 2000) due to a Mitral Valve prolapse. So much for a career in Urban SAR!! In March 2021, the valve just wasn't working as well as it should and had to be replaced, so chest cracked open again! In 2020, I was getting ready to retire and switch my career one more time! This time to being a travel writer and photographer. Combining things I love, travelling and photography. Have begun taking up night sky photography shooting the Milky Way, nebulae and star clusters. Really interesting stuff and a lot of fun if you're into stumbling around at 0-dark, stupid hour!!! You'll see most of my images on my FB page under my name. Friend me and check it out! If you're interested in some unique travel stories, check out my other FB page, "Journey With Jim" as I prepare to pick up where COVID cut me off of my retirement dreams. I'm about to cross Canada on a trek that is unique and exciting at the same time. Again, check out my "Journey With Jim" page, Like it and get the updates as I post them.. Anyway, I've attended a couple of Cold Lake reunions over the years but haven't made it back east for any SVHS or CFB Bagotville reunions. I'd really like to see or at least get in contact with those who I went to school with back in the late 60's and early '70's. Don't hesitate to e-mail me via this site or at jimmorgan323 at gmail dot ca. You'll also find me on Facebook. Looking forward to reconnecting. Maybe we can talk a little about, as Bruce Springstein called it, the "Glory Days"!!!!! Wouldn't miss it for a minute!!
