Jim's Story
I always wanted to be a firefighter when I grew up. My family thought that was a great idea. I have a long history of firefighter in my family on my mother's side (English). Yup, The london Fire Brigade. As it turns out, they were right. I decided to follow my English uncles, rather then my father's career (Military) Heck, I traveled around the world already with my dad, and felt like I already served my time in the military (lol)
But when I spent 2 years in England, and meet my uncles. (who were firefighters) I knew that was my calling. While I was in england, I lost to of my cousins to a fire. They were trapped in their basement, The first thing to catch fire was the stairs. My youngest cousin(Tracey) had kicked a gas can over and the gas headed straight for the hot water heater under the steps. (The only way out).
I became real interested in firefighting from ...Expand for more
then on.I would go and see my uncles at work as much as possible and even train with them.( at least once a week, summer time, a lot more)
Heck, how many little boy ever wanted to be a firefighter as a kid? and REALLY became one? I DID. : )
On the other side, Being a firefighter takes a toll on a marriage. You are gone every third day. You work a 24 hour shift and off 48 hours. But sometimes it takes 48 hrs to re-coup from the last shift you pulled (because of an all night fire). You miss alot of family time! The birthdays, holidays and your child's games or events. You NEVER have a 3-day weekend unless that is part of your vacation (that you must plan 1 year in advance)
Now you know why most fighters get divorced at least once...if not more.. : ( Time with Family is important!!! "screw the job" I could make more money on a trash truck working 9-5 lol
