Jimmie's Story

Hello to all 1957 Compton H.S. graduates. During high school I was an average student, tried (without much success) to be a football player, and a folk music singer with Bob Jacobs, Jim Higgenbothem, and Susie Matilla (the "drifters" or "travelers.") I hope that I'm not remembered as as just another thug or bozo. So, what has Willie been upto over the past fifty odd years? If you could give a rats a.., thank for dropping by and have a great day. Shortly after graduating from Compton H.S. I made the best decison I have ever made! I asked Carolyn Hayes (class of 1958) to marry me and she agreed. Some of you may remember her from the parts she played in several school plays. In January (2009) we celebrated our 51st anniversary with our three children, two grandchildren, greatgrandson and several friends. NOTE --[Carolyn Hayes Williams has an Classmate page(1958)and provides a different look at our common history.] After graduating from Compton High, one semester was spent at Compton College, two active years in the Naval Reserve (based at North Island Naval Station). Upon return from the Navy, I completed my undergraduate degree at Cal State-Long Beach State, worked as a Los Angeles County Deputy Probation Officer. During the Probation years I completed a Master's degree at Cal State-Los Angeles. My formal education ended in 1971 with a Ph.D. in Sociology from Washnington State University. Since leaving Washington, I have been know as "J. Sherwood W...Expand for more
illiams" for all professional business (e.g., university correspondence, publishing, etc.) Since leaving the west coast, most of my working life was spent at Virginia Commonwealth University (1971-2006) in Richmond. Currently I am an Emeritus Professor of Sociology at VCU and on occassion teach a course and do a little reasearch. I am proud to have attended Compton High, and realize that the education and experience I received there served me well. For many years the impact that many of you had on my life went unrecognized. That is no longer the case and I want to thank those of you helped me (knowingly or unknowingly). The guys I spent most of my time with at CHS were Robert (Bob) Jacobs, Robert (Bob) McMillan, and Robert (Bob) Rahner, Robert (Bob) Russell (I still have a little contact with these Bobs). Other CHS pals, with whom I have regretfully lost contact, include Bob Lau, Larry Campbell, Bill Hamilton, Jim Higginbotham, Tom Madron, Keith Rickey, & Fred Workman. If you know how to contact any of these guys please that information to me. Thanks. After a recent perusal of our El Companile it became clear that there is not enough space here to name everyone in our class with whom I enjoyed knowing and who had some influence on me. I feel very lucky to to been a member of the 1957 Compton High School graduation class. Good health and best wishes to you all, Willie (then) and Jimmie or J. Sherwood now.
