Jimmy's Story
I graduated from EFHS and almost immediately went to work as a stocker at Duplan Corporation. At the same time, I took classes at Forsyth Technical College. Just before Christmas in 1973 I was hired as a mail clerk for the U S Postal Service in Winston-Salem. Robin and I were married April 7, 1974. I sorted mail for about 6 years working the first 4 Christmas Days. In the meantime, Robin and I welcomed our first child, Wendy on December 9, 1977. I was working long hours, mostly seven days a week helping to make sure all mail in the office was sorted...Expand for more
and dispatched. In 1980, I accepted a position in the maintenance department. Our second daughter, Amber arrived on May 7, 1984. I made numerous trips to the USPS Technical Training Facility in Norman, OK for courses involving building maintenance and repair. I remained at the Winston-Salem, NC Main Post Office until I received a job in the Greensboro, NC District office. I remained in that position until I was awarded a Headquarters position as a Facility Engineer. I kept that position until I retired last year with more than 35 years of service.
