Joann's Story

The above picture of me was taken with my son, James, at his wedding, one of the happiest days of my life. During my Junior year at Curtis, I met and fell in love with a Senior, Ron Evans, one of our football players, who then graduated in June 1964. After graduating from Curtis, I was employed for a short time (2 years) as Secretary at both Irving Trust Company and then Price-Waterhouse. Not feeling I was quite where I wanted to be professionally, I sought employment at Francis I. duPont-Glore Forgan, as Executive Secretary to the N.Y. Stock Exchange Floor Partner, Harry K. Pujals. Ron and I got engaged and married in September of 1969. While I loved that position at duPont-Glore Forgan, I tendered my resignation in May of 1971 only because I was nine months pregnant and about to have my beautiful daughter, Colleen. Two years later, in May, Ron accepted a job transfer with Xerox Corporation to Rochester,N.Y., and in August of 1973, our son, James was born. Unfortunately, like many love stories, we did not live happily ever after.. We divorced, remaining on friendly terms because of our children. To this date, we still remain good friends and I have been to Staten Island many times to stay with and visit with his Mom, Mrs. Evans on Dudley Avenue, because for the past 50 years, she and I have been best friends. How is that for luck? After the divorce, I began working part-time for the Farmbrook Homes Association as Secretary/Treasurer, a subdivision of 769 homes. I also worked full time for an Attorney as a Legal Assistant, using the skills I learned at Curtis. I then joined the Victor-Farmington Volunteer Ambulance Corps and became a New York State Emergency Medical Technician. I have been a member of the Corps for the past 35 years and am a Life Member. I left the Attorney's office and sought employment at the Community College of the Finger Lakes and became Financial Director of the Continuing Education Department, a position I absolutely enjoyed as well as my colleagues. Unfortunately after four years of employment, I fell on black ice at our local mall while acting for the Corps. I broke my neck and my entire right arm, from the brachial plexus, the tree trunk of nerves that runs down the arm from your neck, tore my rotator cuff and destroyed my elbow as well as crushing my arm (radius) into the wrist and destroying the nerves. After several surgeries, and the help of the most wonderful orthopedic surgeon/doctor on this earth and rehabilitation, I was able to return to my profession as a Legal Assistant with another local Attorney, but only part-time, but had also maintained the Farmbrook Association position, which I did for 35 years. During my above position with the Farmbrook Association, working for the Attorneys and the Victor-Farmington Ambulance Corps, I also was voted in and elected as the Eight District Republican Representative of the Town of Farmington, as well as ran as a Representative to the Ontario County Republican Committee, ha...Expand for more
ving received more votes than Hillary Clinton did in our District according to the Republican County Commissioner. Obviously, I won that County Seat. During the years that followed, our four children, David, Colleen, Kimberley and James, grew up, were active in school and community activities, married, and we now are blessed with ten grandchildren, with another boy on the way in March. Five of these grandchildren are here with us at our special place on Lake Moraine, in the Town of Hamilton, N.Y., just a mile or so from Colgate College. The kids love swimming in the lake at our front yard and running and jumping off the docks as well as boating and skiing. I love my jet ski! My husband Dave inherited this red wood, four bedroom cabin right on the lake with approximately 100 foot frontage. This is truly the life I was meant for, to be the mother of four wonderful children, David, a bio-Medical Engineer and Ph.D; Colleen, the Director of the Wayne County ARC; Kimberley with a Masters Degree in Dance Therapy and our son James, with a degree in Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Counseling and three classes short of his B.S. in Business. We are truly a blessed family and so very thankful to God, our family and copious friends that have made our life so joyful and full. For years we traveled as husband and wife or a very large family, to Ireland, England, Scotland, St. Thomas, St. Marten, all the Virgin Islands, and to Cancun, the best family vacation ever. Unfortunately in 2009, my son, pictured above, was involved in a horrific motorcycle accident and after being worked on by the Victor-Farmington Paramedics and Mercy Flight Helicopter Unit, he was revived, only to die again on the roof of the Strong Memorial Hospital. The team of 34 Cardio-Vascular, Orthopedic, Urology and Internal Medicine surgeons saved my son's life with the help of God, of course! It was by far, the most horrific night of my life, to be told twice in the same evening, that your son had died. I have always been a Roman Catholic and know the prayers of my family and friends brought my son through his darkest night and six days in a coma. When he finally awoke, he said "Hi, Father Mull", to a priest he had never met and that is the honest to God's truth! I hope to see many of my friends and fellow 1965 graduates at our 50th Reunion and want to take this opportunity to thank the Reunion Committee for everything they have done to make the reunion the greatest for the 1965 Curtis Alumni. May God Bless all of you. Update, that little boy born in March, is my Grandson Aedan, now 5 and I adore him with his red hair and red freckles. He also has a brother, Jacob,2, with the blondest and silkiest hair. They are the sons of my motorcycle daredevil mentioned above. My youngest granddaughter just got a soccer scholarship and wants to study to be a Physician's Assistant. I have been so blessed I only wish I still lived on Staten Island so I could see many off my old friends. Regards, Jo-Ann
