Joan's Story

It's a funny thing, trying to look back on those days. My sisters and I lived in a kind of strange home with very odd rules and regulations. We had fun, were well known as the Ridout girls and we took advantage of that to get in the front of the line at Baxters and the like, but I remember being very lonely. I hated the home I came from even though I loved my sisters very much. My mom was not the best role model, but she taught us sponteneity, love of music, flexibility and how to enjoy life by having a very strange sense of humor. At 28 I went to college at Warner Pacific and receive a degree in Psychology and a minor in Biology. A year after graduation I decided to go into teaching. I decided on special ed and taught 6,7, 8the grade in one classroom, with students ranging in ability from pre-primier to talented and gifted. They were emotionally disturbed, oppositional defiant and conduct disordered and I loved them. They were the most unique and interesting groups of kids I think I could ever meet. Over time I met and married, then divorced and again over time met and married again. Even though that marriage, too, ended in divorce, I consider myself lucky to have been married to two wonderful men who taught me a lot. I concentrated on my kids and on my job and just...Expand for more
kept on going. I loved my job. I eventually decided to move to the coast and here I am, right by Tillamook Bay in a beautiful little town of under 600 people. My kids are 26 and 33 and are smart, funny and thoughtful people. I love them and am very proud of them both. Since retiring from teaching I found I had a little too much time on my hands, so I started working for Habitat for Humanity. It's an awesome program and I find the work wonderful. I do a lot of sewing, goofing around with photos, art work, quilting, and just creating things that come to mind. I am reasonably happy and I like the way my life's turned out, even if it isn't what I originally dreamed for myself. Now I am active in my church, I quilt and sew and craft and every once in awhile I go to Portland and let my hair down. I'm very interested in re-newing old friendships and even making new ones from old aquaintences. If you remember me, write me and let's talk. I've had a good, full, interesting life and I am by no means finished. I think I've been a bit cavalier about friendships over the years and I regret it. I know I'd care more and bond deeper at this time in my life. Here's to new friends and happy reunions! Looking forward to talking with anyone who cares to contact me. God Bless you all.
