Joan's Story
Life
I am enjoying my life everyday. I love living and I appreciate my surroundings because I create the environment that I want to be in. I do not allow any negativity into my space nor do I deal with liars. I have learned throughout my life that it is better to give than receive., and this could mean so many things for so many people; but to me it means being a person that will keep it real and truthful, no matter what, always be that unique person, yourself, myself, me, my shadow and I.
As far back as I can remember is when I was almost 4 years old when we lived at 29th and South Park in the basement of this apartment building. leave the child alone or with either of us. I told mama that I could go to the corner store and convinced her to let me take the grocery list and I could do this. During this time a lot of black folks had moved to Chicago from the South, from Mississippi, Louisiana, Virginia
and various other states. My father had come from Oklahoma while mama was a Texan. They had met at a college in Oklahoma. My maternal grandparents had divorced in Texas and Lenora, my grandmother whom we call Mother had remarried and moved to Chicago with our step-grandfather , Ernest, who we called Pops and James Isham was our grandfather who remained in Texas after the divorce.
