Joanne's Story

Life After 25 years with Oregon Telco CU (I started out of high school) moving up the ranks to Operations Manager, supervising 40 employees in a union shop, I retired and took a couple of years hiatus. I became a local and national disaster responder for the American Red Cross. In addition, I'm also a disaster housing inspector for FEMA, which means when natural disasters strike anywhere in the country, I'm off to conduct housing inspections. When deployed with FEMA, I'm typically away from home 3 to 4 months; the job is long and hard, 16-17 hour days, 7 days a week nonstop, but well worth it and lots of fun. I've seen some of the most beautiful countryside which I'd never see in typical travel...Expand for more
, as I'm sent to some very out of the way locations (no, I didn't make it to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, the closest was Baton Rouge, LA). When I'm deployed as a volunteer with the Red Cross, it's typically a three or four week deployment. I may consider joining the International Red Cross at a later time but I have too much to do here for now. As you may have gathered from the above, I'm not married, never have been, and don't have children. How else would I be able to take off on a moments notice and trek around the country? My sister, her husband, and my niece and nephew baby-sit my pet fish (about 50 of them) when I'm away. That's what I've been up to lately, AND YOU??? 11/16/09
