Joanne's Story
Life
I love my job teaching at the university since no two classes are alike. No matter how prepared I think I am they manage to surprise with some new (often twisted)take on what I've just said in class. I get to travel quite a bit - my favourite trip by far was to Zanzibar though my three trips to South Africa from before the elections to the 10 year election in 2004 has infused my work with a very different perspective. In my free time I paint (oils only - water colours are way to tepid for me). My life is jam packed and I still feel that something more outstanding is around the corner. Last but not least, I let a friend convince me to try this aerial obstacle course in BC - it was a blast - conquering my fears up in the douglas firs was quite the energizer! 2011 and things continue to be interesting. I have taken up oil painting. At first, I just wanted to shut down my brain a bit but I've really taken to it. You can see my paintings on my art gallery at <beautyinthedark> (either dotcom or dotca will work). As my brother said with quite a bit of surprise - "they're not stick people."
I've some new areas of interest. I've been writing a bit about social media which means that I'm now on both FaceBook and Twitter.
In 10 years, I hope to be an artist. I'm going to get there by trying to organize an annual art exhibit around a theme that really moves me. The theme I'm working on right now with a friend is around how our identities morph under state surveillance and national security. An engaging way to tackle a serious issue.
