Joannie's Story

Life Hi! I attended Malcolm Campbell for grades eight and nine. At the end of grade nine, I left Montreal and headed to Toronto, where I lived for about eight months before I headed out to Sydney, Australia with my family. What an awesome place Australia is! The weather is heaven and the people are the most amazingly friendly and honest people I met during my travels. I lived in Australia from 1967 to the end of 1970, when I left to back pack through Europe with my fiance who is English. Well, our plans were put on hold after we visited Tahiti, Panama,Curacao and Portugal; I was pregnant! Marriage soon followed and my husband and I spent ten years in England, where we had our three lovely children. We were bitten with the urge to travel again, and although i really wanted to return to Australia, we instead came to Canada. For my husband it was a new start in a new country, but for me it was a chance to get in touch with my roots and try and regain some of my own culture (and accent!). At first we lived in Elliot Lake in Northern Ontario, and then moved to Deep River and then Pickering, Ontario. My husband found himself a job at Ontario Hydro and I worked as a nurse's aide on a part time basis so I could spend as much time as possible with my children. Well, one thing led to another, and I told my husband I was moving out. That was the best decision of my life and as I was working for TD Bank at the time, I felt secure in my job and life just kept getting better and better. Friends introduced me to a lovely man, who is now my second husband, Bob. Bob hails from Atikokan in Northwestern Ontario. We lived in downtown Toronto for ...Expand for more
eleven years, and then when my position with TD was made redundant, we moved to Cobourg, Ontario. Although Cobourg is an absolutely beautiful town with a gorgeous white sand beach, it just didn't feel like home. After a year and a half, we sold our house and bought another just outside Lindsay, Ontario on Sturgeon Lake. We absolutely love it here and enjoy all the perks that come with living lake side. A bird sanctuary is just down the road, so we are visited by all kinds of water foul, including some beautiful trumpeter swans! We enjoy canoeing or going out on our little runabout inboard boat. Our usual destinations are Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls or Lindsay, which are all picturesque tourist destinations. How lucky we are to live where we are!! My children are now in their thirties. I have a daughter and two sons, one of whom is married. My daughter is planning her wedding for next September and it will be our "Big Fat Italian / Caker Wedding!" It should be fun. I do a little painting for a hobby and give everything away as gifts for birthdays and Christmas. It's quite satisfying to know you created something that someone else will cherish! Like you all, I'm well and truly into my middle age. No longer am I the skinny little girl I once was, but am now a "voluptuous" woman (thank you thyroid gland for that!). I think about many of my classmates quite often: Stan Daniels; Gordon, Jeannette, Susan Fink, Aviva Magalnic (isn't that an awesome name!); Jim Kerr; Beverly; Candace; Alistair; Steven; and so many others whose names I no longer remember. How are you all and what are you up to now? Joannie Yurchuk (once Joan Clement)
