Joe's Story

Life After finishing my education in England, I stayed there, marrying my wife Carrie in 1977. She is wonderful! We met at college there (in Exeter) and both did our postgrad at Southampton Univ, eventually moving back to Exeter, which is lovely. I trained as a Chartered Accountant (CPA) and was a partner in a medium-sized firm for many years. Retired at 46 to start our own business. We now run a successful legal publishing business and divide our time between the UK and Madeira Island with summer holidays in the French Alps Get back to the States every couple of years - my brother's family is now in the Portland, Me, area. I am also involved in a timber importing and machining business and do consulting work for companies and law firms in the UK and Europe and some public speaking. I like working so much, I don't think I'll ever stop entirely. ...Expand for more
We have a son Robert (Univ of Sheffield), who worked for KPMG in Leeds and now runs the electronic products side of our business, UK and a daughter, Sue, who has a BS and a law degree and works in mental health. Am very passionate about our football team (soccer), Exeter City. Other than that we like to read and walk and have a good evening in the pub with or without friends/family. We also play tennis. We are learning Portuguese, which is a lot harder then French! I don't think we'll ever stop learning something. It is odd being an American in England, but nowhere near as odd as it was in 1965. Have not been back to Western W Va since 1968, though I intend to take Carrie there sometime - since the elementary school is closed, and our house burned down in 1971 and the whole area was redeveloped, I doubt Mahood Drive will be very familiar.
