John's Story

Life Hi everyone, my name is John Baylis. I am originally from Baltimore, MD. Partially grew up in Silver Spring MD. In 1976, My Dad retired from the Navy and decided to move our family to Florida. I finished high school in 1983 when I Graduated from Umatilla High School in Umatilla, Florida. It was 1983, I was eighteen years old, and I felt that I was on top of the world. In my mind at the time I felt I had all the answers and my parent had nothing to offer in terms of guidance; as far as I was concerned, my parents didn't know a thing. Therefore, against my parents advice, I decided not to further my education. Instead, I moved onto a career. It did not take long before I realized that my parents actually had brains. By then, it was difficult to attend a traditional university due to being married, being a proud homeowner, and having all the bills to prove it. At that time, I told myself that I would do this later. Well, later became even later. In the fall of 1987, and after bouncing from job to job, and learning different trades, I finally listened to my parents. Their advice was to join the Military. In February 1988, I took that advice and embarked on a Career in the United States Navy. After completion of Basic Training, I attended Interior Communications Electronics School; Propulsion Alarms and Indicator School; Dead Reckoning Analyzer Indicator School; various other schools and seminars. In 1990, while stationed aboard an guided missile cruiser, the USS Philippine Sea (CG-58), my ship, me included, were ordered to the Red Sea as part of the joint task force to liberate Kuwait. rt Storm. While on active duty, I took full advantage of the many schools that the Navy offered such as IC- A, MK9 DRAI, IVCS, Micro soldering, and Underwater log to name a few. I completed my Naval enlistment in February 1992 when I was honorably discharged from the United States Navy. I joined Eagle Picher Industries (a Tier 1 Manufacturer) in February 1993. I began employment as a 1st line supervisor Where I managed twelve hourly employees and was responsible for third shift plant operations. Today I am still employed by Eagle Picher Industries and have worked my way up the corporate ladder. I am responsible for managing sixty employees. My job consists of managing people and our operations. I am involved with the development of our company's annual operating plan and meeting key business objectives. Eagle Picher is a diverse organization that requires me to travel from time to time and often to meet with other business leaders with in our organization. I married a wonderful gal and we have two sometimes wonderful children, both of whom are teenagers. My wife is a graduate from the University of South Florida. She is presently teaching special education. Our two boys are named Ryan and Matthew. Their ages are sixteen and nineteen respectively. My hobbies include enjoying family activities, refurbishing cars, and repairing computers. Oh yeah I am also an avid Ebayer. My career goal is to continue with Eagle Picher and become Divisional Vice President. My Bachelor of Science degrees are in business and in marketing; I would ultimately like to obtain my MBA. My personal goal is to obtain financial freedom within ten years.
