John's Story
School for me is part of my vocation whether supporting our exceptional educators, school secretaries, and administrators with student information and human resources management or attending class. I enjoy the opportunities to visit schools and witness welcoming and engaged schools. I currently attend courses at the University of Guelph co-sponsored by the Ontario Association of School Board Officials specializing in information privacy and human resources.
While working towards my degree at Ryerson University I accepted an invitation to join the Golden Key Society recognizing academic excellence at the University. In 2005, I was nominated by The Learning Partnership recognizing Technology Innovation. Though I did not win, I was privileged to be recognized with a group of exceptional technological innovators.
My volunteer time has been spent these past 15 years in sports management, coaching and managing hockey and ringette teams. For six years I volunteered on the executive of Pickering Ringette obtaining one of the first Ontario Trillium Foundation grants in sport. I continue to watch and enjoy my adult children play hockey and ringette. The arenas at times can feel like a second home.
To maintain a healthy perspective I attempt to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps each day - aka Dr. Oz and his 10,000 a day step challenge. This has bee...Expand for more
n beneficial for this desk jockey. I enjoy the time walking affords me to work through challenges and serves as a time for reflection. Also my walks allows me the opportunity to listen to Beatles, 10CC, Supertramp, Cold Play, Keane, The Killers and the occasional classical composition to keep the walks interesting.
Beyond the above, I listen to the BBC, CNN and Fox each morning as part of my drive into work and enjoy watching Star Trek, NCIS, Suits and shows of a similar nature. Thankfully the PVR helps me stay caught up.
I have been blessed with brilliant mentors through out my career. One gentleman was my boss for 17 years, worked for Scarborough Board and was responsible for assisting the school administration develop our student timetables. I never let him forget the challenges of rushing from the pool to the third floor for geography as part of my student timetable. My other mentor, I met as a vice-principal, working closely with him in his many roles at the Board Office. He has an exceptional clarity of thought I admire greatly. He recently retired to become principal in an international school in Vietnam.
I can't complain, since leaving Laurier in 1978, I have been blessed with a wonderful family, an excellent career and opportunities to serve. I look forward to the next decade to witness the change and the challenges ahead.
