John's Story
My schools include Michigan Tech, the U. S. Naval Academy (BS, Theoretical Mathematics), the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School (MS, Applied Mathematics), and San Diego State University (Teacher Credentialing Program).
I spent 22 years as a naval officer. During that time, I served aboard seven ships, one of which, a destroyer, I commanded. I also spent 2 years as the Associate Chairman of the Mathematics Department at the U. S. Naval
Academy, during which I taught calculus, differential equations, leadership, and tactics.
After retiring from the navy, I spent 2 years as an operations manager for a defense contractor and 12 years in the financial services industry (mostly mortgage loans). I now teach math online for Ashford University and on the ground for Grossmont Community College and Vincennes University, the latter as part of the Navy College. I also taught Geometry and AP Statistics for Coronado High School as an intern. I have taught mathematics courses ranging from pre-algebra through calculus to differential...Expand for more
equations, and calculus-based physics.
In each class I teach, I provide my students with the following insight into my view of education:
"In my view, a good education goes well beyond providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to make a living. It should also help them understand and appreciate the world around them. More importantly, I believe that each of us was created in the image and likeness of God to fulfill His purpose for our lives. I believe it is the job of my students to discover and fulfill their purpose in life. My job is to do whatever I can to assist them in navigating through that voyage of discovery. "
I am married and have 3 children, one biological daughter, who is now 32, and 2 adopted children, a daughter who is 25, and a son who is 17. The adopted daughter has given us our first grandchild. He is Christopher and is almost 2. My interests, other than mathematics and science, include fishing with my 17 year old, gardening, history, poetry, elocution, and the Bible.
